There is no clear, definitive answer that Mangle is a girl. Scott Cawthon is reported to have answered “Yes” when asked whether Mangle was a boy or a girl—but that response does not say which one. The game offers conflicting clues, not a settled explanation.
What did Scott Cawthon say about Mangle’s gender?
A Steam community discussion reproduces a statement attributed to Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon. In it, he introduces the question of whether Mangle is “a boy or a girl” and concludes: “The answer is- Yes.” Read the discussion reproducing the answer.
Because the wording answers an either-or question with “Yes,” it leaves the choice unresolved. It is best understood as a playful, ambiguous reply—not an explicit confirmation that Mangle is a girl, both, or any other specific identity. The quote is reproduced in a community discussion, so its attribution should be treated as reported rather than as a directly verified original post.
Why do fans disagree?
Two game-related cues are often raised in the discussion: Phone Guy reportedly uses masculine pronouns for Mangle, while Mangle appears in the “Ladies Night” challenge. These details point in different directions, but neither one establishes a definitive answer by itself. See the fan-maintained Mangle discussion.

So, is Mangle a girl?
The most accurate short answer is: it is not clearly established. Cawthon’s reported “Yes” does not select “girl,” and the game cues do not settle the matter. Saying definitively that Mangle is a girl goes beyond what these sources support.
