Nintendo sums it up as “Link is left-handed…mostly”: several games and versions portray him wielding his sword in his right hand, so there is no single answer that fits the entire series.
Which hand does Link use in each Zelda game?
The table summarizes the portrayals identified in Nintendo Life’s April 28, 2026 series survey. It classifies the original release unless a port or remaster differs, using official art, in-game models or front-facing sprites where appropriate. These are observations of sword use, not an official declaration of a shared canonical dominant hand for every Link.

Sprite direction can affect how a hand appears on screen, so a classification based on a front-facing image is not necessarily equivalent to an in-game model or an explicit statement. For example, the North American Zelda II manual describes Link setting off with “a magical sword in his left hand and a magical shield in his right.” Nintendo Australia’s account and the official Zelda II manual support the distinction between portrayals and versions.
Why is Link right-handed in some games?
Twilight Princess: the Wii release was mirrored
Nintendo says the GameCube version retained Link’s left-handed sword swing, while the Wii version was mirrored, making him right-handed. The change was made so the sword motion would better suit right-handed players using the Wii Remote. The Wii U version is listed as left-handed in the series survey. The difference is a version-specific control and presentation choice, not evidence of a permanent change to Link’s handedness. Nintendo’s explanation directly confirms the GameCube/Wii comparison.

Skyward Sword and the right-side controls
Skyward Sword is also classified as right-handed in the survey. For Breath of the Wild, Nintendo Life reproduces a 2016 explanation attributed to series producer Eiji Aonuma: “With the gamepad, the buttons you’ll be using to swing the sword are on the right side, and thus he’s right-handed.” This ties the portrayal to the controls in that game; it does not establish a series-wide rule. The same right-handed portrayal continues in Tears of the Kingdom.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Link have one canonical dominant hand?
The available evidence establishes how particular versions depict Link using a sword. It does not establish that every incarnation has the same in-universe dominant hand. Nintendo’s qualified wording—left-handed “mostly”—is more accurate than calling Link always left- or right-handed.

There is also historical context for the left-handed portrayal: Nintendo Life quotes Hyrule Historia as saying early art depicted Link as right-handed, then describes a change to left-handed for pixel-art creation and in-game screen configuration. Because that passage is reproduced secondhand, treat it as a reported explanation rather than a directly verified statement from the book.

How to compare Link’s handedness accurately
- Name the game and incarnation rather than treating every Link as one character with an unchanged design.
- Specify the release or version when it matters, especially for Twilight Princess.
- Distinguish sword use shown in official art, an in-game model or a sprite; a sprite’s facing direction can affect what appears on screen.
