Later, his website listed The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum for December 17, 2027, and linked to reports that he would return.
What Ian McKellen said about playing Gandalf again
In an interview published by The Big Issue on September 2, 2024, McKellen said: “I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him.” He then made the limits of what he knew clear: “When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick!”
The remarks conveyed that filmmakers hoped he would reprise Gandalf; they did not establish that he had signed a contract or that a finished script or production schedule existed. The “better be quick” line came after those unknowns and reads as a humorous nudge, not a separate casting confirmation. Read the interview in The Big Issue.
Which Lord of the Rings film is linked to the return?
The new film discussed in contemporaneous coverage was The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. On September 3, 2024, Variety reported the project under that working title, with Andy Serkis directing and starring, and Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens producing. Those were details reported at the time, not a substitute for a current studio announcement. Read Variety’s September 2024 report.

What later reporting says about McKellen’s return
