Young Sherlock is a good reason to try Prime Video if you enjoy fast, stylized mystery-adventure, but it is a risky choice as the only reason to start paying for a subscription. The eight-episode series has energy and visual flair; reviewers disagree about whether its expanding mystery holds together.
What is Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock about?
The series follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, in Victorian England. At Oxford, he meets James Moriarty, played by Dónal Finn, and becomes caught up in a murder investigation that threatens his freedom. The case grows into a wider conspiracy, with adventures also taking the characters abroad.

Amazon released all eight episodes on Prime Video on March 4, 2026. Guy Ritchie directed the first two episodes and executive-produced the series. Matthew Parkhill is showrunner and a writer and executive producer. The cast also includes Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Colin Firth.
What makes it worth watching—and what might not work?
The case for watching
Published reviews identify the show’s strongest draw as its momentum: stylized action, lively production design, and the developing relationship between Sherlock and Moriarty. TechRadar praised the fresh perspective and Ritchie’s action energy. TheWrap also found it fun and visually impressive, especially early in the season.

The trade-offs
The same reviews flag reasons for caution. TheWrap argues that the sprawling mystery loses focus as it escalates. The Guardian is more critical of the brash tone and familiar Ritchie-style formula, while praising Finn’s Moriarty. The lead performance is also a point of disagreement in the critical response.
That makes the show a stronger fit for viewers who like irreverent action and loose Holmes reinterpretations than for those seeking a restrained period mystery, a tightly contained case, or a faithful Conan Doyle adaptation.

Is Young Sherlock included with Prime, and what does it cost?
Young Sherlock streams exclusively on Prime Video. Amazon said in July 2026 that the first season was available in more than 240 countries and territories, but catalogues and membership prices vary by location. Check the Prime Video listing and membership terms for your country before subscribing.
For the United States, Amazon’s July 2026 information listed Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. It also listed a six-month trial for eligible young adults ages 18–24 and college students, followed by $7.49 per month or $69 per year. These are US-specific figures and offers as reported by Amazon, not universal or guaranteed permanent rates.
If you already use Prime’s shipping or other membership benefits, the series can be an added reason to keep a membership. If you would subscribe only for this show, weigh the local price against one eight-episode season and the possibility that its style may not suit you.
Is there a second season?
Amazon reported in July 2026 that Season 2 was in production. Hero Fiennes Tiffin is returning, and Guy Ritchie is set to direct the first episode. Amazon had not announced a release date in that update.

Is the series based on Andrew Lane’s books?
Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels are a related option if you want more fiction about Holmes as a young person. The television series is not a faithful adaptation of Lane’s books, however, and the novels should not be expected to reproduce its plot.
