On December 12, 2023, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced that it had decided to end E3. The ESA later announced a separate conference called iicon; it did not describe iicon as E3 returning.
Did the ESA permanently end E3?
The ESA announced its decision to end E3 on December 12, 2023. In an emailed statement reported by the Associated Press, ESA president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis said: “After more than two decades of serving as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry, ESA has decided to end E3.” Associated Press, December 12, 2023.

Is iicon a replacement or revival of E3?
No. In February 2025, the ESA announced iicon (the Interactive Innovation Conference) as a separate event intended to connect leaders across industries. Its announcement described it as an invitation-only conference planned for April 27–30, 2026, at the Fontainebleau Resort in Las Vegas. ESA announcement, February 6, 2025.

In a December 2025 ticket announcement, the ESA described iicon as an executive summit that was not open to consumers. Its announced 2026 dates have passed. Neither announcement called it E3 or presented it as E3’s return. ESA announcement, December 10, 2025.

The ESA’s announced decision was to end E3, and the reviewed official material contains no subsequent revival announcement. iicon was a distinct, invitation-only executive conference, not a consumer version of E3. Whether the ESA ever changes course remains unknown.
