Yes. Disney+ discontinued its native GroupWatch feature in September 2023. It is not simply hidden in a TV app or a redesigned menu, and reinstalling Disney+ will not bring it back. You can still watch remotely with friends using Apple SharePlay or third-party services, but none is a universal, built-in replacement.
What happened to GroupWatch?
GroupWatch let Disney+ subscribers invite others to watch the same movie or episode with playback synchronized across their devices. Viewers could also react during playback. The option appeared on a title’s details page, where a host could invite participants and start the session.
Disney+ removed the feature in September 2023; contemporary reporting said it was no longer available and that Disney’s help pages had stopped referring to it. (What’s on Disney Plus) There is no verified public explanation for why Disney removed it. The available evidence does not establish that the change was a temporary outage or that a like-for-like replacement was planned.

What can replace it?
Disney+ does not currently offer a universal GroupWatch-style feature across its apps. The alternatives depend on your devices and on how you want to communicate:

On iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV: try SharePlay
SharePlay is an Apple-and-FaceTime option, not GroupWatch under a new name. Disney’s UK English help page says each participant needs an active Disney+ subscription and lists support on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV with the latest system software. That page says Mac is not supported. Because the cited instructions are for the UK, do not assume every detail or availability is identical in every market.
- Start a FaceTime call with the people joining.
- Open Disney+ on a supported Apple device and start a compatible title.
- Choose the SharePlay prompt or control if it appears, then confirm that participants can join.
If the SharePlay option does not appear, check that everyone has an active subscription, the devices and software are supported and up to date, and the title is available in each participant’s region. If you are using a Mac, Disney’s cited page does not list it as supported.

On a computer: Teleparty or Scener
Teleparty
Teleparty is a browser-based option for synchronized playback and text chat. Its Disney+ instructions say to install the extension, open Disney+ in a supported desktop browser, select and start a title, click the Teleparty button, and share the generated party link. Other participants need the extension and access to Disney+ too. See Teleparty’s Disney+ setup guide and support information.
Teleparty says participants need access to the relevant streaming service and the same title in their regional library. Its stated capacity of “1,000+” is a vendor claim, not a practical recommendation for a private movie night. Its mobile app is described as beta or limited, so a desktop browser is the more straightforward choice.
Scener
Scener may suit a small group that values voice or video chat as well as text. Its FAQ says hosting on a laptop or desktop requires Chrome and the Scener extension, and that Disney+ is supported for U.S. users. A private room accommodates up to 10 party-goers with video, audio, and text chat. Scener’s theater format allows unlimited text-chat participants, but only up to 10 co-hosts can use video and audio. Mobile participants may need a second device for synchronized video.

On Android, smart TVs, or consoles
Check the current app and device requirements before inviting everyone. Rave describes itself as a cross-platform app with synchronized playback and text and voice chat, and lists Disney+ among its supported services. Its published device information lists Windows 10 or later, Android 10 or later, and iOS 18 or later. That does not guarantee that every title or device combination will work; confirm compatibility in Rave’s device and service information.

If you are watching on a TV, you may need to coordinate the session from a computer or phone and use a supported method to play the video on the TV. No third-party option restores GroupWatch inside the Disney+ TV app.
What everyone needs
- Disney+ access: A watch-party service does not unlock the movie for other people. Disney says SharePlay participants need active subscriptions; Teleparty and Scener also require viewers to have access to the relevant streaming service. Follow Disney+ plan and household terms rather than treating a party link as a way around them.
- The same title in each region: Disney+ catalogs can differ by country. A participant may be unable to join if a movie or episode is not available in their local library.
- Compatible devices and software: SharePlay, extensions, and dedicated apps have different requirements. Update the relevant app, browser, operating system, or extension.
- A stable connection: Buffering for one viewer can make a session feel out of sync even when the tool is working properly.
Disney+’s current U.S. help page says a household subscription can stream on up to four devices at once; Extra Members can stream on one device at a time, and Hulu content included in a bundle can have separate limits. (Disney+ concurrent-stream limits) These are simultaneous-stream limits, not synchronized playback: four people watching separately does not create a shared session or group chat.

Fix common watch-party problems
The SharePlay control is missing
Confirm that you started a FaceTime call, are using a device and software version supported in your region, and have updated Disney+. Check that each participant has an active Disney+ subscription and can watch the title in their region. Disney’s cited UK page does not list Mac support.
The Teleparty button does not appear
Check that the extension is installed and enabled in a supported desktop browser, that you are signed in to Disney+, and that playback has started. Ask other participants to install the extension and sign in to their own accounts. If needed, reload the party or reopen the title from the shared link.

A title works for some participants but not others
Check regional availability and service access for each viewer. The same subscription service can have different catalogs in different countries, so a shared party link cannot make an unavailable title appear.

Playback drifts out of sync
Pause together, then resume; reload or restart the party; and reopen the title through the invitation link. Update or reinstall the relevant extension or app. Check for buffering or a weak connection on the participant who is falling behind. Scener documents re-sync and re-launch steps in its FAQ.
Someone is watching on a TV or phone
Make sure the watch-party tool supports the device and that the app is not in a limited or beta release. A computer may be needed to host a browser-extension party; Scener mobile viewing may require a second device. For unsupported combinations, a manual countdown is a simple fallback, though participants will need to correct any drift themselves.
Which option should you choose?
- Already using FaceTime on supported Apple devices? Try SharePlay first.
- Watching on a desktop and want a simple link and text chat? Teleparty is the most direct browser-based option.
- Want voice or video chat with a small group? Consider a Scener private room, bearing its Chrome setup and 10-person limit in mind.
- Prefer a dedicated mobile or cross-platform app? Investigate Rave and verify the specific device, region, and title before setting a time.
- Do not want another app or extension? Use a countdown and a separate call or chat, accepting that playback will not stay automatically synchronized.
Whichever method you choose, check device compatibility and title availability before the viewing starts. The service options and their mobile support can change; consult the providers’ current help pages for the latest requirements.
