Yes—but not everywhere. DISH and Gray Media reached a new multi-year agreement on May 1, 2026, restoring 226 Gray-owned local channels across 113 U.S. markets. Some of those stations are NBC affiliates. However, this was not a nationwide agreement with NBCUniversal, so your local NBC station still depends on your ZIP code, station ownership and DISH package.

The short answer: NBC is back for some DISH customers
If your local NBC affiliate is one of the Gray Media stations covered by the agreement, it should have returned to DISH. If your station is owned by another broadcaster—or your package does not include local channels—you may still be unable to watch it.
DISH’s NBC channel guide says local NBC stations generally appear somewhere between channels 2 and 70, depending on location. It also says NBC requires a package with the Local Channels Add-On.
Do not interpret “NBC is back” as meaning that every DISH customer now receives one universal nationwide NBC channel. NBC programming is normally delivered through local affiliates, and local carriage remains market-specific.

What was actually missing?
“NBC” can refer to several different things:
- A local NBC affiliate: The station serving your Designated Market Area. It carries NBC primetime, NBC News, Sunday Night Football and other network programming, as well as local news, weather, sports and syndicated shows.
- NBC network programming: The national shows and live events delivered by that local affiliate.
- NBCUniversal cable networks: Services such as USA, Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC and Syfy. These are separate networks and are not automatically part of a dispute involving a local NBC station.
The Gray dispute involved local stations owned by Gray Media. It did not automatically remove every NBC-related channel or affect every local NBC affiliate in the country.
What happened between DISH and Gray Media?
On or around March 10, 2026, DISH said Gray had withdrawn 226 local channels in 113 markets during a carriage dispute. In its announcement, DISH described the disagreement as involving retransmission fees and other contract demands. Those statements represent DISH’s position; the public material does not independently establish every allegation about Gray’s negotiating conduct.
On May 1, DISH announced a new multi-year agreement with Gray Media. The announcement said the deal restored 226 local channels in 113 markets, including stations affiliated with ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, MyNetworkTV and Telemundo.

The safest conclusion is therefore that Gray-owned stations were restored under the agreement, while individual availability must still be checked by market.

Why do local channels disappear from pay-TV services?
Broadcast stations are generally available free over the air, but television providers commonly pay station owners for permission to retransmit those signals to subscribers. These permissions are called retransmission consent agreements.
When a provider and station owner do not renew an agreement, the station owner can withdraw retransmission permission. The provider may then lose the station until a new contract is reached. The dispute can affect important local programming—not just scripted shows—including weather alerts, election coverage, local news and network sports.
These negotiations are separate from whether the station can still be received with an antenna. A station may be unavailable on DISH while continuing to broadcast over the air in its local area.

Does the Gray agreement apply to you?
Check four variables:
- Your market: You must live in one of the markets served by a participating Gray station.
- Station ownership: Your local NBC affiliate must be among the stations covered by the Gray agreement. NBC affiliates owned by NBCUniversal, Hearst, Tegna, Nexstar, Sinclair, Scripps or another company are not automatically covered.
- Your package: DISH says local NBC requires the Local Channels Add-On.
- Your location and equipment: Local channel lineups vary by ZIP code, geographic location, time zone, programming package and, in some cases, antenna configuration.
A customer in a restored Gray market may have NBC again while a customer in a nearby market still lacks it because the local affiliate belongs to a different station group or is subject to a separate issue.

How to check your NBC channel on DISH
- Open the DISH channel guide.
- Enter your ZIP code.
- Search for NBC or browse the local channels.
- Confirm the station’s call sign and channel number.
- Check that your account includes the Local Channels Add-On.
The exact channel number is not universal. DISH’s generic guide places local NBC stations broadly in the 2–70 range, but your market may use a different number within that range.
What to do if NBC is still missing
If the station is listed in your ZIP-code guide
- Check the channel number rather than assuming NBC remains on its old position.
- Reboot the DISH receiver.
- Allow the guide and authorization information to refresh.
- Check whether the problem affects one television or every receiver in the home.
- Verify that the Local Channels Add-On is active.
- Contact DISH support if the station is listed but still does not appear.
If the station is not listed
The likely explanation is market availability, package eligibility or a separate carriage issue—not necessarily a receiver fault. Confirm the call sign of your local NBC affiliate and whether it is owned by Gray. The cited DISH announcement does not provide a complete station-by-station restoration list, so ZIP-code verification is more reliable than relying on a general headline.
Also make sure you are using DISH satellite TV rather than Sling TV. They are related services, but their channel lineups and carriage arrangements should not be assumed to be identical. The Gray announcement specifically describes restoration for DISH TV customers.

What does NBC’s return mean for sports and live events?
Restored NBC access can be especially important for live programming. NBC carries Sunday Night Football and other major broadcasts. DISH’s NFL information identifies NBC as the outlet for Sunday Night Football and Super Bowl LX, subject to local-channel availability.

That does not guarantee every event on every DISH system. Local station availability, league restrictions, regional rights and package requirements can affect what appears on your receiver. A missing local NBC affiliate can also interrupt local news, emergency information and network election coverage.

NBC says live streaming generally requires both an eligible participating TV provider and a local station agreement covering your area. Its provider list may include DISH and Sling, but availability is location-dependent. NBC also says the provider billing address must be within the local viewing area. See NBC’s live-streaming support page.
Authenticated NBC streaming is therefore useful for eligible subscribers, but it is not necessarily a standalone replacement for a full live-TV service.

An antenna may be the simplest alternative if you mainly want NBC and other local broadcast networks. It avoids retransmission disputes and does not require a recurring pay-TV subscription after the equipment purchase.

Reception depends on signal strength, distance from the transmitter, terrain, building materials and antenna placement. NBC provides over-the-air reception guidance.
Another live-TV service
A different provider may make sense if DISH does not carry your particular NBC affiliate, your household already has reliable broadband or you prefer app-based television. Confirm the exact local station in your ZIP code before switching; competitors’ local lineups also vary by market and can change.
Should you stay with or choose DISH?
DISH remains a reasonable fit if its ZIP-code guide lists your NBC affiliate, you want satellite service and a conventional DVR, and you already value the rest of its linear-TV package. The May 1 agreement means an old blackout report is not an accurate description of every affected market.
DISH is a weaker fit if your specific NBC station is still absent, you mainly watch free broadcast networks, you want no installation or contract, or you are considering the service solely for one NBC program. In those cases, compare an antenna, authenticated NBC access or a live-TV provider after verifying local coverage.
Why these disputes keep happening
Local carriage negotiations reflect a broader trade-off in traditional television. Station owners seek retransmission payments for valuable local programming, while providers must balance those fees against subscriber demand, package prices and the possibility of losing customers during a blackout. Declining linear-TV audiences and concentrated ownership of local stations can make individual negotiations especially consequential.
The result is that a national television brand can appear to be “missing” even when the underlying issue is a contract between a provider and one local station group. The Gray agreement resolved this particular dispute for the affected stations, but it does not prevent future or unrelated local-channel disputes.
