For most new TV shoppers, DIRECTV is the more practical choice—but the right version depends on your address and internet connection. Choose DIRECTV via Internet if your broadband is dependable and you do not want a dish; choose DIRECTV satellite if broadband is unreliable or unavailable. If you already have U-verse and it works well at a fair total price, keeping it may be the better move. These are not identical services: U-verse is a legacy AT&T TV service, while DIRECTV offers both internet-delivered and satellite TV. Availability, channels, fees, and promotions vary by location and account.
First, distinguish the three services
- AT&T U-verse TV: A legacy service delivered over AT&T network infrastructure to dedicated receivers, with a familiar channel guide and DVR. AT&T still publishes package and support information, but that does not mean a new customer can order it at every address. Check eligibility directly.
- DIRECTV via Internet: Live TV delivered over broadband through the DIRECTV app and compatible devices. Gemini hardware is an option for a more traditional TV interface. It requires a dependable internet connection and is vulnerable to broadband or home-network problems.
- DIRECTV satellite: TV delivered by satellite dish and receiver. It can suit homes without reliable high-speed internet, but requires permitted dish placement and a clear signal path; severe weather can disrupt reception.
The former AT&T TV and AT&T TV NOW brands were renamed DIRECTV in August 2021. That history does not make today’s DIRECTV internet service the same thing as U-verse, nor does it make internet and satellite delivery interchangeable. DIRECTV explains its delivery options and the brand transition.
Availability: check the address before comparing
U-verse orderability depends on the address and available AT&T infrastructure. A current U-verse customer may be able to retain service even when a neighbor or a prospective new customer cannot sign up. Ask whether the exact address is eligible, whether TV requires a particular AT&T internet connection, and whether the service can be restored or changed if equipment fails.

Price: compare the bill, not the banner
There is no sound universal claim that DIRECTV is cheaper than U-verse. DIRECTV has separate internet and satellite offers, and current prices and promotions should be checked for the customer’s ZIP code. U-verse prices are also regional and may have changed recently: AT&T says package price adjustments begin on or after June 25, 2026 (price-change notice).
As a regional reference—not a national quote—the DIRECTV U-verse legal guide effective June 25, 2026 lists monthly western-guide rates of $37 for U-basic, $128 for U-family, $182 for U200, $208 for U300, and $264 for U450. Listed Latino tiers are $172 for Latino U200, $198 for Latino U300, and $254 for Latino U450. The guide also lists a one-time $35 activation fee, generally $10 per additional receiver per month, and a $15 DVR fee on U-basic; an HD technology fee of $10 may apply where applicable. Confirm your own account’s rates and fees before relying on these figures.

Compare the resulting first-year total and the ongoing monthly total, not just the starting package price. Confirm all terms in the specific offer before placing an order.

Channels and sports: build a household checklist
Channel counts are only rough signals. AT&T currently advertises 370+ channels for U200, 485+ for U300, and 550+ for U450 on its U-verse package page. The regional legal guide gives different counts—for example, over 420 for U200 and over 565 for U450—showing why counts should not be treated as universal or directly comparable. DIRECTV also advertises hundreds of channels, but the lineup depends on delivery, package, location, and date.
Before switching, list the channels and services your household actually uses: local ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC affiliates; ESPN and other national sports networks; regional sports networks; news; children’s programming; Spanish-language channels; premium movie networks; music; on-demand shows; and any desired 4K programming. Check each item against the channel lineup for the exact ZIP code and package. Also check whether a channel is included for live television, available in the app, or restricted to certain devices.

Sports deserve a separate check. Verify the local affiliate and regional sports network for the teams you follow, then confirm national coverage, league-specific add-ons, blackouts, and whether a separate league subscription is still needed. DIRECTV says regional sports networks vary by ZIP code and package and are not available everywhere (sports and availability details). Do not select a provider based on a broad claim that it has every regional network. For live games, an internet stream may also have more delay than a conventional broadcast signal; if timing matters, test the actual setup.

U-verse offers a traditional receiver, remote, guide, and DVR experience. AT&T’s package comparison describes HD-ready DVR availability through Total Home DVR Service for several packages. That familiarity can be valuable if everyone in the household already knows the system or prefers a conventional remote.

DIRECTV via Internet is more app- and device-oriented, with optional Gemini hardware intended to bring live TV, apps, and search together. It depends on compatible hardware and an internet connection. DIRECTV’s cited service information describes up to three concurrent streams, but the exact recording storage, retention, stream, and playback rules should be checked for the specific current plan. Do not assume cloud recordings will transfer if you change providers or equipment.
DIRECTV satellite uses an installed dish and receiver-based setup. It avoids dependence on home broadband for the core TV signal, but requires a suitable installation location and may be a poor fit for a rental or apartment where dish placement is prohibited.
The U-verse app is listed for U-verse subscribers in the United States on Apple iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire TV at no additional charge. DIRECTV supports viewing on compatible mobile and TV devices, but app viewing requires a data connection and not every channel is necessarily available to stream. Check which local channels and recordings are viewable at home, while traveling, or away from the home network before treating an app as a full replacement for the TV service.

- U-verse: Service can be affected by AT&T network or gateway outages, receiver faults, line quality, and local infrastructure. An established, stable installation is a real advantage for a satisfied customer, but it is not a guarantee of future reliability.
- DIRECTV via Internet: ISP outages, weak Wi-Fi, congestion, insufficient bandwidth, app/device faults, and data limits can interrupt viewing. A wired connection or strong home network may help, but cannot fix an ISP outage.
- DIRECTV satellite: Broadband outages do not usually interrupt the satellite signal, but heavy rain or snow, obstruction, misalignment, or installation problems can. A clear line of sight and permission to mount the dish matter.
So there is no technology that is categorically more reliable for every home. Strong broadband and blocked satellite visibility favor internet delivery; weak broadband and an unobstructed sky may favor satellite; a working U-verse installation may be simplest to keep.
Who should choose which?
- Existing U-verse customer who is satisfied: Consider staying if the service works, the channels and DVR suit you, and the current all-in bill remains competitive. First check any new rate and whether support or equipment changes affect your account.
- New customer with dependable broadband who wants no dish: Consider DIRECTV via Internet. Verify bandwidth and Wi-Fi at the TV, local channels, sports, stream limits, and post-promotion price.
- Rural household or home with weak broadband: Consider DIRECTV satellite if a dish can be installed with a clear signal path. Factor in weather interruptions and installation.
- Sports-heavy household: Choose only after confirming the specific local and regional networks, league coverage, package tier, add-on cost, and blackouts for your ZIP code.
- Older adult or viewer who wants a familiar remote and guide: U-verse or a receiver-based satellite setup may feel simpler than app-only viewing. If considering Gemini, test whether its interface suits the people who will use it.
- Apartment renter: Internet delivery may avoid dish-permission problems, but confirm building internet reliability and whether a wired connection is possible. Satellite works only if installation is allowed and the dish has a suitable view.
- Viewer who wants only a few channels: A full pay-TV package may be unnecessary. Compare alternatives such as an antenna for local broadcasts or a smaller streaming service, but do not assume they carry the same sports, local affiliates, or channel lineup.
Switching checklist for U-verse customers
- Save your latest bill and note the price, fees, discounts, and renewal or promotion dates.
- List the channels, premium services, sports teams, recordings, and number of TVs your household uses.
- Check each channel and local affiliate in the replacement service’s ZIP-code-specific lineup; verify regional sports networks and blackouts.
- Ask AT&T whether removing TV changes your internet price or any bundle discount, and whether your address can retain internet separately.
- Get the new offer’s total monthly cost, promotion end date, contract, equipment, installation, cancellation terms, and return deadlines in writing or in the order summary.
- For internet delivery, test broadband and Wi-Fi where the TVs are used. For satellite, confirm dish permission, placement, and installation feasibility.
- Do not cancel U-verse until the replacement is installed or working and you have confirmed the channels and functions you need. Then follow the provider’s equipment-return instructions and keep proof of return.

DIRECTV is generally the more practical option for new buyers because it is currently marketed through internet and satellite delivery. That does not make it an automatic upgrade for a U-verse household. The deciding factors are address eligibility, internet reliability, the channels you actually watch, equipment preferences, and the full bill after the promotion—not the brand name or advertised channel count.
