No. Crave is Bell Media’s Canadian streaming service; HBO is a Warner Bros. Discovery brand and programming library. Crave carries HBO programming in Canada, but it is not HBO or the same service as Max—currently transitioning back to the HBO Max name—in the United States. If you are in Canada, Crave is generally where to check for HBO shows; in the U.S., check Max/HBO Max.

What is Crave?
Crave is a Canadian streaming and premium-TV service owned and operated by Bell Media. Its catalogue extends beyond HBO: Bell lists Crave Originals, HBO and Max programming, Showtime, Hollywood movies and French-language programming. Some subscriptions or bundles offer STARZ as a separate add-on. Crave can be purchased directly or accessed through participating television, internet or mobile providers. What does “HBO” mean?
HBO can mean the entertainment brand, the programmes associated with it, a premium television channel in some markets, or an HBO content section inside a broader streaming service. In the U.S., HBO has also been offered as a standalone streaming subscription. These uses are related, but they are not interchangeable. HBO is a brand and body of programming; Crave is a Canadian platform that carries some of that programming under distribution rights.
What are Max and HBO Max?
Max is Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader streaming service in markets where it is available. Its U.S. catalogue includes HBO series and films alongside selected Warner Bros. titles, DC, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner library and other programming. The company’s help centre says the service is transitioning back to the HBO Max name; check the official naming notice for the latest status. The notice described the app experience, programming, plans and pricing as unchanged at the time it was published.
The U.S. help page lists Basic with Ads at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, Standard at $16.99 per month or $169.99 per year, and Premium at $20.99 per month or $209.99 per year. These are U.S. prices, not Canadian Crave prices, and can change. The same page lists two simultaneous streams and downloads for Standard; Premium lists four streams, 4K and Dolby Atmos where available, and more downloads. Why are HBO shows on Crave?
Because of Canadian licensing and distribution rights. Bell has licensed HBO and Max programming for Crave in Canada, making Crave a principal legal Canadian destination for those shows. Bell’s corporate materials refer to a renewed multi-year rights agreement, but licensing windows can change. A title’s presence on a U.S. service does not guarantee it will appear on Crave, and a Crave Original or Canadian-licensed film need not appear on Max in the United States. Does Crave include all HBO content, or the same catalogue as Max?
Do not assume the catalogues are identical. Bell’s current marketing says qualifying Crave offerings include the entire HBO library, but that statement is about HBO programming offered through eligible Crave plans—not every title available across Max worldwide. Max includes non-HBO programming, and separate licensing arrangements can affect where individual films and series stream. Availability also changes as titles enter or leave a service.
Bell says its cited Standard With Ads and Premium offerings provide the same content library, with differences in features such as advertising, streams, video quality and downloads. This is a plan-specific statement, so check the current Bell plan details rather than inferring that every provider bundle or future tier has identical access.
Is HBO Canada the same as Crave?
“HBO Canada” refers to earlier Canadian premium-TV branding associated with HBO programming. In 2018, Bell announced that The Movie Network, HBO Canada and CraveTV would come together as the all-new Crave service. Today, people may still say “HBO Canada” informally when they mean HBO shows available through Crave, but that does not make Crave identical to U.S. HBO or Max/HBO Max. Which service should you check in your country?
- Canada: Check Crave for HBO programming licensed to Canada. A Crave subscription is not a U.S. Max/HBO Max account, and the Canadian service has its own catalogue and billing.
- United States: Check Max/HBO Max for the U.S. catalogue. Max’s current official availability list names the United States and other supported markets, but not Canada; consult the official availability and travel page for the latest country list.
- Another country: Use the same official availability page to see whether Max/HBO Max is offered there, then check local services for the specific title. Rights differ by country.
Crave is a Canadian service; its subscriptions and content rights are designed for Canada. Max says titles can vary with your physical location and that the service is unavailable in countries where it has not launched. Travel can therefore change what you can watch even while your account remains active.

Usually, if the title is currently listed in Crave and included with your subscription. Before signing up or troubleshooting access, check these points:
- Confirm your Crave package. Review the plan or bundle you actually have; access can depend on subscription terms.
- Check how you are billed. A direct Crave account and a subscription through Bell or another provider may have different activation and account-linking steps.
- Search for the exact title in Crave. A show’s HBO label does not establish that it is currently available in Canada.
- Activate or link provider access if required. Provider subscriptions may need account setup before streaming. Bell’s Crave support page describes its service and Bell TV access, including on-demand viewing through Bell TV and the Fibe TV app.
Choosing between Crave and Max/HBO Max
Neither is universally better. Match the service to your country, the title you want and the features you use.
- Crave is the practical fit if you live in Canada and want HBO programming alongside Crave Originals, Canadian films or French-language content—or already receive Crave through a participating provider.
- Max/HBO Max is the practical fit if you live in the U.S. or another officially supported market and want that market’s catalogue, including its selection of Warner Bros., DC and other non-HBO programming.
- Check the title first if one specific series or film is the deciding factor. Licensing is title- and country-specific, so a brand label is not a reliable catalogue guarantee.
- Compare the actual plan features if ads, simultaneous streams, video quality or downloads matter to you. Compare like with like, including currency, taxes, billing period and any provider promotion.
Plan, provider and billing details to check
Crave’s price depends on the plan, billing route and any promotion. Bell’s cited page advertises Crave Premium at $22 per month plus tax, but that is a Bell-channel price signal, not a permanent price for every subscriber or provider. Check the live Crave plan page and the terms offered at checkout. Do not directly compare that Canadian price with U.S. Max prices without accounting for currency, taxes, plan features, ads and catalogue differences.
If you subscribe through a TV, internet or mobile provider, billing, activation, promotions and cancellation may be handled by that provider. Cancel through the company that bills you, not automatically through the Crave app. Before adding a provider bundle, check whether you already pay Crave directly: Bell warns that maintaining a direct subscription while adding Crave through Bell can result in duplicate billing.
