No. Brad Pitt’s F1 The Movie is a fictional sports drama, not a biography of a real Formula 1 driver. Sonny Hayes, Joshua Pearce, Ruben Cervantes, Kate McKenna and the APXGP team were created for the screenplay. The film feels authentic because it was shot around real Grand Prix weekends, uses actual circuits and includes real F1 participants. Sonny’s career-ending crash is specifically inspired by Martin Donnelly’s real 1990 accident, but Sonny himself is not Donnelly.
What is fictional in F1 The Movie?
The central story is invented. Sonny Hayes is a former F1 driver whose comeback brings him to the struggling APXGP team. Joshua Pearce is his younger teammate, Ruben Cervantes runs the team, and Kate McKenna is part of the fictional organization. APXGP is not a real Formula 1 constructor or team.

The comeback and championship campaign
Sonny’s return to top-level racing, his relationship with Pearce, the team’s fight to improve and its championship ambitions are screenplay creations. The film does not dramatize a documented season or reproduce the biography of a specific driver.
Sonny Hayes is not a real driver
There is no real F1 driver whose career matches Sonny’s character. Brad Pitt plays the fictional racer; he does not portray Martin Donnelly or any other named historical driver.

What real event inspired Sonny’s backstory?
Brad Pitt said, “We based Sonny’s past on Martin Donnelly’s crash.” Donnelly suffered a near-fatal practice accident at the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. That incident provided the emotional basis for Sonny’s career-ending crash and his long absence from Formula 1.
The connection is limited to the inspiration for that part of Sonny’s history. The film does not present Sonny as Donnelly, and Donnelly did not return to F1 in the manner shown by the movie’s fictional comeback plot.

Why does the film look like a real F1 season?
The production placed its fictional story inside genuine Formula 1 surroundings. Filming took place during real Grand Prix weekends and at circuits including Silverstone, the Las Vegas Strip Circuit and Yas Marina. Current F1 cars, paddocks and race-weekend operations give APXGP the visual context of an actual team.
Real drivers, teams and advisers
Real F1 drivers and teams appear around the APXGP storyline. Lewis Hamilton served as a producer and technical adviser, helping the production reflect the sport’s procedures and atmosphere. His involvement improves the film’s technical grounding, but it does not turn the plot or its characters into a true story.

Was the crash in F1 based on a real accident?
Yes, in inspiration rather than direct reenactment. Donnelly’s 1990 Spanish Grand Prix practice crash is the real incident linked to Sonny’s backstory. The movie then builds a fictional character and fictional career around that starting point.

The bottom line on the film’s “true story” status
F1 The Movie is best described as fiction grounded in real Formula 1 practice and history. Its people, team and comeback plot are invented; its realism comes from authentic locations, real F1 access, active participants and a crash backstory inspired by Martin Donnelly. Calling it a biography or a direct account of Donnelly’s life would be inaccurate.
