Netflix’s official materials reviewed do not explicitly identify Battle Kitty as nonbinary. One Netflix announcement refers to Kitty as “its,” but that wording alone does not confirm the character’s gender identity or preferred pronouns.
What Netflix’s official sources say about Kitty
Netflix’s March 20, 2019 announcement introduces Battle Kitty as an original animated interactive series and identifies Matt Layzell as its creator. In one sentence, Netflix writes: “Kitty is using its super-strength, monster battling intuition, and amazing accessories to unlock a new battle ground … on Netflix!” The announcement does not explain that use of “its” or state Kitty’s gender identity.
Netflix Tudum’s April 30, 2022 character guide describes Kitty as the protagonist, who wants to become champion of Battle Island. It does not explicitly label Kitty as nonbinary. Netflix’s title page describes the show as an interactive adventure following Kitty and Orc, but likewise does not identify Kitty as nonbinary.
Does “its” mean Kitty is nonbinary?
No conclusion about identity or pronoun preference follows from that single sentence. It documents the wording Netflix used in its announcement; the announcement does not say whether “its” reflects Kitty’s pronouns, a stylistic choice, or something else. It is therefore more accurate to say Kitty’s nonbinary identity is not explicitly confirmed in these official sources than to claim either that Kitty is or is not nonbinary.

What the creator’s comment adds
In the 2019 Netflix announcement, creator Matt Layzell describes Kitty as “an aspirational underdog with a big spirit of determination” and says he wants kids who feel small to realize they “can stand strong, have friends, and go on to do amazing things.” The quote speaks to the character’s inspirational role, not Kitty’s gender identity.
What can be concluded
- The official Netflix materials reviewed do not explicitly call Kitty nonbinary.
- Netflix uses “its” once in the 2019 announcement, without explaining the wording or identifying Kitty’s gender.
- The sources establish Kitty as the protagonist of an interactive adventure who hopes to become champion of Battle Island.
These conclusions describe the official materials cited here; they do not establish that no additional creator comment exists elsewhere.
