As checked on August 18, 2026, Archive of Our Own (AO3) was listed as Operational on the official OTW status page. That does not guarantee that every reader can connect successfully. A third-party monitor recorded a resolved disruption on August 17, lasting roughly 45 minutes, and continued to show individual reports from users in the United States, Canada, and Argentina.
In other words, AO3 did not appear to have a confirmed site-wide outage at the time of checking, but intermittent, regional, account, browser, and network problems can still make it appear down.

How to tell whether AO3 is down for everyone
- Open the official OTW status page.
- Find Archive of Our Own and check whether it is marked Operational, Degraded Performance, Partial Outage, Major Outage, or Maintenance.
- Open the incident history. A headline marked “Operational” may follow a recently resolved incident.
- Test AO3 in a private browser window, a second browser, or on another device.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Use third-party monitoring as supporting evidence only. The Down for Everyone or Just Me AO3 page is based on user-report volume and can reflect isolated or regional problems.
AO3’s Known Issues page also directs users to the OTW status page and official status accounts:

The strongest evidence of a broad outage is an official incident combined with failures across browsers, devices, networks, and regions. One failed work page, a single social-media report, or an error limited to one Wi-Fi network is weaker evidence.
If AO3 is down for everyone
There is usually nothing useful to fix locally during a confirmed outage. Wait for official updates and avoid repeatedly refreshing pages or resubmitting actions.
- Save any unsent writing locally.
- Do not repeatedly submit login, password-reset, posting, comment, or bookmark forms.
- If an action timed out, check later before submitting it again. A timeout does not prove that the action failed.
- Recheck the status page after the incident is marked resolved, since search, counters, cached pages, and login sessions may recover at different speeds.
If AO3 remains inaccessible and its normal support form cannot be reached, OTW provides a backup contact form for this situation.

Start with the least disruptive browser tests
- Reload once, then wait instead of refreshing repeatedly.
- Try a private or incognito window.
- Try another browser.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block ads or scripts, modify page content, prefetch links, or automatically open or reload tabs.
- Clear only AO3’s cookies or site data if pages loop, remain stale, or fail after a login.
- Check that your device’s date and time are correct.
- Use the normal AO3 address rather than a saved or altered link.
AO3 says extensions can interfere with posting-form JavaScript and can cause comments or kudos sections to appear missing. Disable an extension only as a diagnostic test, then re-enable it if appropriate.
Test the network
Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or the other way around. If AO3 works on mobile data but not on home Wi-Fi, the problem may involve your router, DNS, ISP, filtering, or network route rather than AO3 itself. Work, school, hotel, library, and public networks can also block or interfere with websites independently.
Testing another legitimate network is safer and more informative than immediately changing DNS or using a VPN. Those options may change the route, but they are not guaranteed fixes and can introduce new security, login, or performance problems.
Fixes for common AO3 symptoms
“Session expired,” “Auth error,” or repeated forced logouts
This is not proof that AO3 is down. AO3 documents a recurring session problem involving messages such as “Session expired” and “Auth error.” The official workaround is:

- Log in there instead of using the small login form in the top corner.
- After signing in, reopen the page you were viewing rather than refreshing the same tab that produced the error.

“Retry Later”
AO3 says this message may appear when one IP address makes many requests in a short period. Possible triggers include rapid filtering, repeated password-reset attempts, many simultaneously reloading tabs, automatic link-opening extensions, or heavy activity from other people sharing the same IP address.
- Stop refreshing and wait several minutes.
- Close duplicate tabs.
- Stop repeated login or password-reset attempts.
- Disable extensions that automatically open, reload, or prefetch pages.
- Retry more slowly.
AO3 describes this as a temporary IP-based restriction, not a permanent ban. Requests should be allowed again after a few minutes.
AO3 is in a tiny desktop layout or too wide on a phone
Disable your browser’s Request desktop site setting and temporarily disable extensions. Test while logged out and logged in. If the layout is wrong only when you are logged in, contact AO3 Support.
Comments or kudos are missing
A loaded work page does not necessarily mean every page element loaded correctly. AO3 says ad blockers and similar tools, including tools such as 1Blocker or AdBlocker, have often caused missing comments or kudos displays. Temporarily disable the blocker for AO3 and reload to test.

Search results, hit counts, kudos, or history look stale
This can be delayed data rather than an offline site. AO3 says its pages are heavily cached and that search indexing can temporarily produce discrepancies in hits, kudos, comments, bookmarks, dates, or result ordering. Updates to Mark for Later and reading history may take up to 10 minutes to appear.
If ordinary pages load but counters or search results are behind, wait and check again rather than treating the delay as a complete outage.
Posting fails or form fields do not work
Browser JavaScript interference can prevent some posting-form fields from opening. Test in another browser or with extensions temporarily disabled. If a submission times out, check your work later before posting it again to avoid duplicates.
Downloads fail
AO3 documents download problems with very large works, including works exceeding one million words or works containing many images. Downloading HTML and converting it may work as a workaround, and AO3 notes that Calibre may handle some long-work downloads more reliably.

If an updated EPUB does not replace an older file with the same name in iBooks or some versions of Kindle on iOS, delete the older file before downloading again.
“Could not establish a secure connection to the server”
On older devices, this may indicate that the device, operating system, browser, or TLS support is too obsolete for AO3’s necessary security updates. Update those components if possible.
AO3 maintains http://insecure.archiveofourown.org for limited compatibility, but warns that its security protocols are outdated. Treat it as an emergency compatibility option only—not a normal way to log in or enter sensitive information. Prefer the secure site and an updated device.

- Does the OTW status page show an incident? Wait for updates and avoid repeated submissions.
- Does AO3 work in a private window or another browser? Suspect cookies, cache, extensions, or browser settings.
- Does it work on another device? Suspect the original device or browser.
- Does it work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi? Suspect the local network, DNS, ISP, router, or filtering.
- Is only login failing? Use the full Login page, then reopen the target page.
- Does the message say “Retry Later”? Stop rapid requests and wait several minutes.
- Is only one feature affected? Follow the relevant Known Issues workaround for comments, kudos, mobile layout, search, posting, or downloads.
- Is it still broken? Send one detailed report to AO3 Support.
When to contact AO3 Support
Contact AO3 Support when the issue is not covered by Known Issues, when a particular account or feature remains broken while the site works for others, or when a work, tag, collection, download, or posting action repeatedly fails.
Include a specific summary, the exact error message, the relevant URL, and a reproducible sequence of steps. Send one report for the issue and do not submit multiple reports unless you have meaningful additional information. If AO3 itself is inaccessible, use OTW’s backup contact route.
What not to do during an AO3 problem
- Do not repeatedly refresh or resubmit forms.
- Do not reset your password repeatedly in quick succession.
- Do not enter credentials into unofficial mirrors or “status” pages.
- Do not treat the insecure address as a safe everyday alternative.
- Do not assume a VPN, DNS change, DDoS attack, maintenance event, or censorship event without an official source.
