In May 2024, a California Department of Justice spokesperson said Archewell Foundation was “current and in good standing” after reports that it had received a delinquency notice. That statement describes the organization’s status at that time; it does not verify its status today. The Sussexes’ official site now says the Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies, and California says its live Registry Search Tool—not an older periodic list—is the controlling source for a current standing check.
What happened with Archewell’s California delinquency notice?
In May 2024, reports said California’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers had issued a delinquency notice concerning required reports and annual fees. A California DOJ spokesperson subsequently told Vanity Fair on May 15, 2024: “After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organization is current and in good standing.”
An Archewell spokesperson said the organization had investigated the matter and was “fully compliant and in good standing,” adding that due payments had been made and required paperwork filed. Those were the organization’s statements; the California spokesperson’s comment was the state’s dated confirmation. Neither should be read as proof of the charity’s present-day registry status.
What does “good standing” mean in California?
California tracks several distinct status fields for charitable organizations. Its status definitions explain that standing is not determined by a single label. For example, a charity with a Listed entity status, Registered registration status, and a Current, Due, Past Due, or In Review reporting status is considered in good standing.

California’s terminology changed: the older registration label “Current” became “Registered,” while reporting labels separately describe filing or review status. A “Current” reporting label therefore should not be confused with the registration field’s current terminology.
How to check a California charity’s current standing
- Open the California DOJ’s Registry Reports page and follow its link to the Registry Search Tool.
- Search for the organization’s current legal name. Because Archewell’s official site describes a transition from Archewell Foundation to Archewell Philanthropies, consider searching both names if necessary.
- Review the entity, registration, reporting, and compliance fields together against California’s status definitions.
- Use the live Registry Search Tool result for a current determination. California says it reflects real-time data and controls if it differs from the periodic reports list.
The periodic reports list is updated twice monthly, so it may not show a recent change. Its dataset was dated September 16, 2026; by itself, that list does not establish a charity’s status on October 4, 2026. The organization-level record for Archewell Philanthropies is needed to make a definite current-status claim.

Is Archewell Foundation now Archewell Philanthropies?
The Sussexes’ official site states: “After five beautiful years, the Archewell Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies.” The page also links to the Foundation’s impact report and 2024 Form 990. This supports describing a name or organizational transition, but does not itself establish the charity’s present California registry fields.
Axios reported on December 19, 2025 on a restructuring involving fiscal sponsorship. That detail is Axios’s reporting; for the naming transition, the Sussexes’ own site is the direct source.

What the 2024 Form 990 says—and what it does not
The Archewell Foundation’s fiscal 2024 Form 990, signed November 17, 2025, reports these filed totals:

These are separate accounting measures: contributions and grants are not total revenue, and total expenses are not synonymous with grants paid. The figures describe what the tax return reports; they do not, on their own, establish the effectiveness or impact of the organization’s work.

CharityWatch says it could not issue a fiscal 2024 rating because it had not obtained Archewell’s independent audited financial statements, despite outreach. CharityWatch also notes that the Form 990 reports the statements were audited by an independent accountant. The Foundation’s 2023 Form 990 used the phrase “SHOW UP, DO GOOD” and described work focused on uplifting communities, building a better online world, and restoring trust in information. That is the mission language in the 2023 filing, not necessarily a complete list of current programs.
