The simplest trick-or-treating rule is to treat a lit porch as a welcome signal—not a guarantee—and to stay outside, follow your group’s plan, and move on politely when a home does not seem to be participating. These seven courtesies make the evening safer and more comfortable for children and neighbors without pretending every household follows the same customs.
Seven trick-or-treat etiquette rules
1. Choose homes that appear to welcome visitors
A lit porch or outside light is a commonly used sign that a household is welcoming trick-or-treaters. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said in its 1989 Halloween safety release, “Children should go only to homes where residents have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the CPSC’s 1993 guidance also point to outside lights as a cue. Treat that light as a practical signal, not a promise that someone is home or a legal rule.
2. Accept treats at the door; do not go inside
Stay outside when asking for or receiving a treat. CPSC guidance advises children not to enter a home or apartment unless accompanied by an adult; the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises children never to enter a home or car for a treat. The clearest courtesy for a doorstep visit is to accept the treat outside.
3. Be patient, greet the host, and say thank you
Give the person at the door time to answer, use a friendly greeting, and thank them for the treat. There is no required phrase: a simple “trick or treat” and “thank you” is enough. These are everyday manners, not official safety requirements.

4. Stick with your group and follow the route you planned
Agree on a familiar route before setting out and stay with your group. CPSC recommends a pre-established route and a buddy system; Miami-Dade Fire Rescue recommends a familiar, well-lit route and says young children should be accompanied by an adult. If the group changes plans, make sure everyone knows before moving on.
5. Use sidewalks, walk rather than run, and cross carefully
Use sidewalks where available and walk instead of running between homes. CPSC includes both recommendations in its 1989 safety guidance. Keep ordinary care around traffic: Halloween does not change the need to cross attentively.

6. Respect a home that is not participating
If there is no sign that a household is welcoming visitors, or nobody answers, move on without knocking repeatedly or trying another entrance. Using the light as a cue and leaving an unanswered home alone are practical ways to respect residents’ choice about participating; the latter is an etiquette inference, not a quoted official rule.
7. If you are hosting, make the approach safe and keep pets under control
Clear obstacles from steps, lawns, and porches so visitors can approach safely. The CPSC recommends removing hazards; AAP also advises clearing toys and bikes, watching for wet leaves, checking outdoor lighting, and restraining pets. A flashlight and reflective tape or bright clothing can help trick-or-treaters be seen after dusk, as CPSC and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue guidance recommends.

Which customs vary by neighborhood?
There is no universal candy-piece limit, age cutoff, or nationwide trick-or-treating schedule established by the sources cited here. Those expectations are household or local preferences, not general rules. If timing matters, check local event information; if you are hosting, you can decide how many treats to offer and whether to participate.
The federal CPSC safety releases cited above date to 1989 and 1993. Their advice on visibility, routes, sidewalks, and home preparation remains useful as general guidance, while local customs may differ.
