Akira Toriyama’s legacy reaches beyond Dragon Ball: he made his mark with the earlier hit Dr. Slump, helped bring manga and anime to audiences around the world, and gave Dragon Quest many of its best-known character and monster designs. His influence is documented across those media, though no single creator can be credited with globalizing manga on his own.
What did Akira Toriyama create besides Dragon Ball?
Toriyama’s career began before the series that made him internationally famous. He debuted as a manga artist in 1978, and Dr. Slump, which began in 1980, became his first major hit. Shueisha’s memorial also names Sand Land among his works, a reminder that his manga career was not confined to one world or cast of characters.
That range matters when considering his legacy: Toriyama was not simply the author of a long-running franchise. His characters and creative work were part of a broader body of manga that Shueisha says affected other artists and creators. Shueisha’s memorial statement names Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball and Sand Land.
How did Dragon Ball reach audiences beyond Japan?
Dragon Ball began in 1984. Its animated adaptation followed in 1986, extending the story into a medium that could reach viewers who had never picked up the manga. SOAS lecturer Filippo Cervelli describes the anime and later cross-media versions as part of the series’ wider international life. JapanGov likewise points to the worldwide success of the anime, which began broadcasting internationally in the late 1980s, as an important moment in the growth of anime and manga abroad.

Translation was another route into the work. JapanGov reported in 2024 that Dragon Ball had been translated into 25 languages. Cervelli argues that translated volumes introduced many Western readers to manga and to its right-to-left reading convention. He also connects the series’ success with the development of production, media-mix and distribution systems that paid greater attention to global audiences. That is a scholarly interpretation of one major contribution—not proof that Toriyama alone caused manga’s international growth.
JapanGov also reports that Toriyama asked for translated editions to preserve right-bound books, and says this request is believed to explain why that format became a global standard. The article’s phrasing is qualified: it does not establish that Toriyama’s request was the sole origin of the format.

What do the reported sales figures show?
In 2024, The Associated Press reported that Bird Studio attributed 260 million copies in worldwide manga sales to Dragon Ball. That is the studio’s reported figure, not an independently audited count in the AP report. JapanGov’s figure of 25 languages describes translations, not sales. Together, these measures indicate the franchise’s reach, but they capture different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.
How did Toriyama influence video games?
Dragon Quest is the clearest documented example of Toriyama’s work in games. The series’ first installment appeared in 1986, and Toriyama contributed illustrations to the franchise. Game designer Yuji Horii credited him with countless character and monster designs over the decades, saying: “You can say that the history of Dragon Quest exists with Toriyama-san’s character design.” That is Horii’s view of how closely the designs are bound to the series’ identity, not a universal ranking of Toriyama’s influence.

How did other manga creators describe his influence?
Shueisha’s memorial says Toriyama’s characters and creativity affected manga artists and creators. In a memorial tribute, One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda described Toriyama as a formative presence for younger artists: “He showed us the potential of manga, showing us the dream that it can lead to the world.” The words capture one creator’s response to Toriyama’s example; they sit alongside the dated works and credits as evidence of a legacy carried forward by peers.

Toriyama’s influence is easiest to see across three connected strands: manga authorship that included successful work before and beyond Dragon Ball; a manga and anime franchise that traveled through translation and adaptation; and visual design that became part of a major video-game series. The works and credits establish his contributions, while claims about how those contributions changed global culture are interpretations that should be attributed to their authors.
