Is AAVE a Dialect or a Language? What Linguists Say

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Most professional descriptions place African American Vernacular English (AAVE) within the family of American English dialects, but linguists do not treat “dialect” as a lesser or defective form of speech. The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) says AAVE is systematic and rule-governed, and that the language-versus-dialect distinction is shaped by social and political factors as well as linguistic structure.

That means two statements can both be accurate: AAVE can be described as an English dialect, and the label “language” cannot be rejected simply because a variety is called a dialect. The important linguistic fact is that AAVE has an organized grammar, sound system and patterns of use.

What linguists mean when they call AAVE a dialect

In professional linguistics, dialect is a neutral term. It usually means a variety of a language associated with a community of speakers. A dialect can have rules that differ from those of another variety while remaining fully systematic.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), in a 2003 technical report, lists African-American English alongside other American English varieties, including Appalachian English and Standard American English. Its definition treats dialects as regular language systems rather than collections of mistakes. In that framework, calling AAVE a dialect identifies its relationship to American English; it does not rank it below a standardized variety.

The label is also qualified by variation. ASHA notes that most, but not all, speakers of African-American English are African American, and that not all African Americans speak it. Individual speakers may use some features associated with the variety, switch styles according to setting, or use another regional or family variety.

The LSA’s 1997 position

The LSA adopted a resolution during the public debate that followed the Oakland school board’s December 1996 action concerning “Ebonics.” The resolution states that the variety known as “Ebonics,” “African American Vernacular English” and “Vernacular Black English” is “systematic and rule-governed like all natural speech varieties.”

The organization also rejects descriptions such as “broken English,” “defective” or “ungrammatical.” Those terms confuse difference with disorder. A speaker can produce a sentence that does not follow the conventions of Standard American English and still be following the conventions of AAVE.

For education, the LSA says the central issue is not choosing one label. Its resolution explains: “What is important from a linguistic and educational point of view is not whether AAVE is called a ‘language’ or a ‘dialect’ but rather that its systematicity be recognized.”

Why “language” and “dialect” are not simple opposites

People often assume that a language is a complete, sophisticated system while a dialect is an informal or incomplete version. Linguists do not use the terms that way. The distinction may involve structure, but it is also influenced by history, institutions, identity, education, writing traditions and political power.

Criterion What it can show Why it cannot settle the question by itself
Linguistic structure Whether a variety has consistent grammar, pronunciation patterns and vocabulary. AAVE clearly has systematic structure, but systematicity is a property of both languages and dialects.
Mutual intelligibility How readily speakers of two varieties understand one another. There is no universal cutoff, and shared understanding can be affected by exposure, context and topic.
Social and political convention Which variety institutions, communities or governments name as a language. These decisions reflect power and history, not only linguistic distance.
Community and scholarly usage How speakers and researchers describe a variety at a particular time. Names change, overlap and may serve different purposes.

The LSA specifically warns that social and political grounds help determine whether people use “language” or “dialect.” Mutual intelligibility alone does not decide the labels. Consequently, asking whether AAVE is “really” a language in order to determine whether it is legitimate starts from a false premise.

AAVE, African American English and African American Language

The terminology has changed across periods and fields. AAVE expands to African American Vernacular English. AAE, or African American English, is common in professional descriptions, including speech-language research. AAL, African American Language, is a more recent designation used in scholarship.

Why some scholars use AAL

Sharese King’s 2020 review in the Annual Review of Linguistics describes AAVE as one of the most studied dialects in American English and explains that AAL reflects changing approaches to researching race and language. “Language” in AAL is not necessarily a claim that every researcher has abandoned “dialect.” It can signal a broader focus on linguistic practices, identity and community rather than on a single fixed vernacular.

The terms can therefore carry different emphases. AAVE highlights vernacular usage and its relationship to English. AAE often works as a concise professional label. AAL can encompass a wider sociolinguistic perspective. None of these names is a universal mandate, and no single label should be used to judge a speaker’s intelligence, authenticity or correctness.

What “Ebonics” means in context

“Ebonics” became prominent in public discussion during and after the Oakland debate. PBS’s historical account documents how the word has been used with different meanings. In current writing, it is best to identify the historical context rather than assume that every speaker or linguist uses it as a preferred everyday name. The LSA resolution remains the clearest statement of the Society’s position on systematicity and education.

What makes AAVE a rule-governed variety

Calling AAVE systematic means that its patterns are learned, shared and predictable within a speech community. Speakers do not randomly omit or alter parts of Standard American English. They draw on conventions governing sentence structure, verb meaning, pronunciation, vocabulary, conversation and style.

Grammar and meaning

AAVE grammar can mark distinctions that Standard American English marks differently or leaves to context. Features associated with aspect, tense, negation, agreement and emphasis can carry specific meanings. A listener familiar with the variety interprets those patterns as meaningful grammatical choices, not as failed attempts to reproduce another dialect.

Pronunciation and sound patterns

Like other dialects, AAVE has regular pronunciation patterns. Speakers may vary those patterns by region, age, audience and situation. Variation does not make the system chaotic; it shows that the variety includes stylistic options and ongoing change.

Vocabulary, discourse and style

Distinctive words and expressions are only one part of a dialect. AAVE also includes ways of organizing stories, signaling stance, taking turns and adapting speech to a listener. A speaker may use a feature in one setting and avoid it in another without abandoning a linguistic identity.

The existence of internal variation is compatible with a shared system. Standardized varieties also differ by region and speaker, yet no one concludes that they lack grammar. The same principle applies to AAVE.

Who speaks AAVE, and why speaker counts are difficult

AAVE should not be treated as a synonym for Black American speech as a whole. ASHA emphasizes that not all African Americans use it, while most—but not all—people who use African-American English are African American. Speakers outside the Black American community may acquire particular features through family, neighborhood, media or peer networks, although social meanings and access are not identical for everyone.

Use also varies by feature. One person may use a recognizable grammatical pattern but not a particular pronunciation. Another may shift toward a regional mainstream variety at work and use more AAVE features with relatives. The University of Hawaiʻi overview notes that this variability makes speaker counts difficult: it is unclear whether “speaking AAVE” means using any feature, using a cluster of features, or identifying with the variety.

For that reason, a precise population figure requires a definition of what is being counted. Without one, estimates can give a misleading impression of certainty.

Where AAVE came from: competing historical explanations

The history of AAVE is an active area of scholarship rather than a settled origin story. The University of Hawaiʻi overview describes two broad families of explanation.

Contact and creole-related accounts

One line of argument emphasizes contact among English varieties and African languages during slavery and the colonial period. On this view, intense multilingual contact and changing conditions of transmission could have contributed to restructuring and the development of distinctive grammatical patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inheritance from English varieties

Another line of argument stresses continuities with older British and Southern United States English varieties. It points to features that have precedents in earlier English dialects and argues that the variety’s development cannot be explained solely through a creole pathway.

Why a single-origin claim is too strong

The available overview presents a history that may involve both inheritance and restructuring. It does not establish one uncontested path, and the LSA’s 1997 resolution was not intended to resolve every historical question. A careful account therefore describes the competing explanations and avoids saying that AAVE is either simply “African” or simply an unchanged form of British English.

What the debate means in schools

The language-versus-dialect argument has practical consequences in classrooms. Students may be evaluated against Standard American English while using AAVE at home or with peers. If teachers interpret a systematic home variety as evidence of low ability, they can mistake a difference in language experience for a learning problem.

The LSA resolution supports helping students acquire Standard English when that is an educational goal, while recognizing the legitimacy of their vernacular. This is an additive approach: students learn an additional variety without being told that their first variety is broken. Effective instruction can make the contrast between varieties explicit, teach when different forms are expected, and assess the intended academic skill rather than penalizing identity.

ASHA’s guidance is especially important for speech-language professionals. A dialect difference is not, by itself, a speech or language disorder. Evaluation must distinguish a pattern shared by a speaker’s community from difficulties that occur across the varieties the person uses.

Common misconceptions, corrected

“Dialect” means inferior

It does not. In linguistic usage, dialect is descriptive and neutral. A standardized variety has institutional support, not a monopoly on grammar.

AAVE is just slang

Slang refers mainly to vocabulary associated with informality or group identity. AAVE encompasses grammar, sound patterns, discourse practices and systematic variation, so reducing it to slang leaves out most of the linguistic system.

Every Black American speaks AAVE

No. African American communities are internally diverse, and individual use changes by region, upbringing, audience and feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling AAVE a language proves it is separate from English

Not necessarily. Some scholars use AAL or language-oriented descriptions to foreground community and sociolinguistic history. Other professional sources place African-American English among American English dialects. The label alone does not determine genealogical classification.

The Oakland debate settled the linguistic question

The 1996 Oakland action prompted major public discussion, and the LSA responded in 1997. That resolution established an institutional position on systematicity, language rights and education; it did not close every debate about origins or terminology.

How to answer “Is AAVE a dialect or a language?” accurately

  1. State the common professional classification. Say that many linguists and professional organizations describe AAVE or African-American English as a dialect of American English.
  2. Add the qualification about labels. Explain that “language” and “dialect” are not determined by a single purely linguistic test; social and political history also matters.
  3. Emphasize systematicity. AAVE is rule-governed and legitimate, not broken or deficient English.
  4. Name variation. Do not assume all African Americans speak it or that all speakers use every associated feature.
  5. Identify the terminology. Mention AAE and AAL when the context requires it, and explain that scholarly names have changed.
  6. Avoid an invented origin story. Present contact, creole-related and inherited-English accounts as competing parts of an ongoing historical discussion.

The most precise conclusion is therefore conditional rather than evasive: AAVE is commonly classified as an English dialect, while the language-versus-dialect boundary is a social and political convention as well as a linguistic one. Whatever label is chosen, its grammar and cultural significance deserve the same analytical respect given to any natural speech variety.

For the institutional position, consult the Linguistic Society of America’s January 1997 resolution as reproduced by LINGUIST List. Sharese King’s 2020 Annual Review of Linguistics article provides a contemporary discussion of AAL and research terminology.
