It depends on your measured electricity use, local power price, desktop cost and the cloud service you choose. A used desktop you already own can have low upfront cost, but running it around the clock adds electricity, internet resilience, maintenance and recovery work. A cloud subscription shifts those costs and responsibilities; first check that the service fits your workload, since looping uploaded videos is not the same as encoding a live camera or complex OBS production.
Compare the same workload over the same period
Set a comparison horizon—such as six or twelve months—and include all costs required to keep the stream running. Treat a desktop’s purchase price as sunk only if you already own it and would not otherwise sell or repurpose it. If buying one for this purpose, include the actual purchase price and any repairs or setup.
| Cost or requirement | Used office desktop | Cloud option |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront | Actual desktop price, plus any needed repair or setup | Check for setup costs; usually avoids buying a desktop |
| Recurring | Electricity, internet and backup, plus maintenance | Exact subscription or VM/GPU fee; add storage or bandwidth charges where applicable |
| Workload fit | Must run the selected encoder and software, such as OBS, continuously | Confirm whether it is a prerecorded-video loop service, a general-purpose virtual machine, or a live-production encoder |
| Reliability and recovery | Depends on local power, ISP, hardware and restart automation | Depends on provider and service; verify recovery and support terms |
| Maintenance and attention | You maintain the operating system, software, equipment and stream | The provider may automate parts of the workflow; check controls and limits |
Calculate the desktop’s electricity cost
Measure actual wall draw
Use a plug-in watt meter to measure the computer’s average draw while it is doing the intended streaming work. A power supply’s rated wattage is not the computer’s actual consumption. A 120–200 W range appears as a worked assumption in a StreamNeo comparison; it is not an independent measurement or a universal range for used office desktops.
Apply your local tariff
Use this formula for the measured average draw:
Monthly electricity cost = average watts × hours used ÷ 1,000 × your price per kWh.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a 30-day estimate, 720 hours at 120 W is 86.4 kWh; at 200 W it is 144 kWh. Multiply the applicable usage by your own marginal electricity rate. These examples use the stated assumed wattages, not measured desktop results. Add any incremental internet or backup-power costs separately.
Check that the cloud option does the same job
“Cloud encoder” can mean different things. A managed service that loops uploaded videos may be a good fit for a prerecorded 24/7 channel, but it is not automatically a replacement for a virtual machine running OBS to encode a live camera, a mixed program feed or a complex scene. Compare services only after matching the workload, required controls, video quality and recovery behavior.

What published prices can—and cannot—tell you
Gyre’s pricing page, checked October 3, 2026, lists Start at $49/month for one HD stream, Start+ at $99/month for four HD streams or one 4K stream, and PRO+ at $169/month for eight HD streams or two 4K streams. These are that vendor’s advertised prices, not market averages. Check the live page for its current plan details, storage and quality limits: Gyre pricing.
Cloud GPU marketplace rates alone do not establish the full price or suitability of a YouTube streaming setup. For example, PowerGPU lists hourly rates and storage or bandwidth charges, but you still need to choose a suitable configuration and account for all required resources: PowerGPU pricing.

Match the YouTube stream settings before costing hardware
The encoder has to sustain the stream settings you select, and the internet connection needs enough reliable upload capacity. YouTube’s official encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, and supports up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its H.264 examples recommend 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; the same table gives 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively as recommended values. Check YouTube’s current table for the full resolution and frame-rate combinations rather than extrapolating from these examples.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its system automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers, so your encoder sends an ingestion stream rather than separate versions for every viewer. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Which option is cheaper for your situation?
A desktop you already own
It may be cheaper on a cash-outlay basis if it can encode the required stream reliably and its electricity, connectivity and maintenance costs remain below the cloud service’s total cost over your chosen period. Do not count the full purchase price again if it is genuinely sunk, but do include energy and any new backup or repair costs.
A desktop you need to buy
Compare the purchase and setup costs plus recurring operation against the cloud plan or compute configuration for the same months. A low purchase price alone does not settle the comparison: account for measured draw, the upload connection, resilience and the time needed to maintain the machine.
A cloud service
A subscription can be the better operational fit if you want the stream to continue without leaving a home computer running. Whether it is cheaper depends on its actual plan and any extras, and whether it supports your stream type. A loop service is not a like-for-like choice when you need to encode a live camera or elaborate OBS scene.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60 fps for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, and the monthly price is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI and cards are available; card checkout is available worldwide. To try it, start with StreamNeo.
