Short answer: 123Movies is not itself a virus in the technical sense, but current sites using the name are unverified and high risk. They may expose you to deceptive ads, phishing, fake virus alerts, unwanted downloads, or unsafe apps. Simply opening a page does not prove your device is infected; what you clicked, downloaded, installed, or entered matters.
What happened to the original 123Movies?
The original 123Movies was an unauthorized movie-streaming operation. It shut down in 2018. The name still appears on websites using labels such as “123Movies,” “123Movieshub,” and “GoMovies,” but that does not establish that any current site is run by the original operators or is an authenticated successor. Domains, mirrors, search results, and app listings can lead to different operators and change over time. The service’s history is not proof that a present-day site is genuine or safe.
For that reason, there is no reliable “official 123Movies” domain to recommend. Avoid mirror lists and unofficial apps: a site’s name, familiar design, search ranking, or HTTPS padlock does not verify its ownership, licensing, or safety.

Virus, malware, or fake warning?
A virus is a kind of malicious software that infects files or systems and can spread. Malware is the broader category, which includes viruses as well as spyware, ransomware, trojans, adware, browser hijackers, and credential stealers. A webpage is not usually a virus by itself. It can still put you at risk by showing malicious ads, redirecting you to phishing pages, exploiting outdated software, or persuading you to install something harmful.

A full-screen message or notification saying “Your device has a virus” is not proof that it does. Such warnings can be scareware designed to make you call a fake support number, pay for bogus help, install software, or allow browser notifications. Google cautions users not to download software just because a website claims a device is infected. Chrome’s guidance on unsafe sites and warnings explains the kinds of threats browser protections may flag.
How 123Movies-style sites can put you at risk
- Malicious ads and redirects: Pop-ups or injected advertising may open new tabs or lead to fake support, phishing, gambling, or scam pages. Some redirects may promote bogus software updates or malware. Not every ad on every clone is malicious, but an unauthorized site with changing operators gives you little basis for trusting its advertising chain. The FBI has warned about redirect systems that selectively send visitors to phishing pages, fake updates, scams, and malware (FBI public service announcement).
- Fake play and download buttons: A page may show several buttons, then ask you to install a “codec,” player, browser extension, VPN, or app to watch. A browser video stream should not normally require a random executable or extension. Treat unexpected installers such as
.exe,.msi,.scr,.bat,.cmd,.js,.vbs,.ps1, or.apkfiles as especially risky. An.mp4filename alone is not a guarantee of safety either. - Notification abuse: If you click Allow on a notification prompt, the site may later send fake virus alerts, phishing links, or fraudulent offers even after its tab is closed. That can be an unwanted browser permission rather than evidence of an infection.
- Credential and payment theft: Be wary of “free” viewing that requires an email, password, card number, paid age verification, or sign-in through Netflix, Google, Apple, or another service. A clone can imitate legitimate login pages or use verification as a pretext to collect information.
- Unofficial streaming apps and devices: Downloading an APK or sideloading an app onto an Android phone, Android TV, Fire TV device, or unofficial TV box carries additional risk. The FTC warns that pirate streaming apps and add-ons can expose users to stolen credentials, payment theft, intrusive advertising, and misuse of infected devices (FTC guidance). The FBI has also warned that unofficial streaming devices and pirated software may contain malware or backdoors (FBI announcement).
Can visiting the page alone infect your device?
Opening a page and closing it is a lower-risk action than installing an app or running a file, but it is not a guarantee of safety. Current browsers and operating systems block many known threats, while phishing, notification prompts, malicious redirects, and software vulnerabilities remain possible. Risk rises if you clicked ads, allowed permissions, ignored a browser warning, downloaded or opened a file, installed an extension or app, or used outdated software. “My antivirus found nothing” does not establish that a site is trustworthy.

What to do after visiting
If you only opened the site
- Close the page and any related tabs. Do not interact with further pop-ups.
- Do not call a number displayed in a virus warning, and do not download a suggested “cleaner” or player.
- Update your browser and operating system. If you notice unusual behavior, run the security scan built into your device.
If you allowed notifications
Remove the permission for the suspicious domain in your browser’s site or notification settings. In Chrome on desktop, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Notifications, locate the domain, and block or remove it. Labels and menus can vary by Chrome version and device; look for the site’s notification permission if the path differs. On a phone, use the browser’s site settings or notification controls. Revoking permission stops that channel; it does not remove malware if software was installed.

If you downloaded a file or installed something
- If you did not open the file: Delete it from Downloads and empty the Recycle Bin or Trash. Run a security scan.
- If you ran it or the device is acting strangely: Disconnect it from the internet while you assess the situation. Run a full security scan; if needed, use the operating system’s offline or boot-time scan. Get security software only from the operating system maker or the security vendor’s official site.
- Remove unfamiliar software and extensions: Check installed apps and browser extensions for items you did not intentionally add, and uninstall them. Review recently added startup items and, if symptoms persist, network proxy or DNS settings.
- For Android or a streaming device: Remove the sideloaded app and turn off installation from unknown sources. If the device still appears compromised, back up only essential personal files and consider a factory reset or qualified help.
The FTC recommends keeping security software current and scanning after suspected malware exposure. Its malware cleanup guidance also explains why a scan is only one part of responding to an incident.

If you entered a password or payment information
- From a device you trust, change the affected password. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and enable multifactor authentication.
- Review recent sign-ins and account sessions, then revoke any you do not recognize.
- If you entered card details, contact the card issuer promptly. Ask whether to replace the card, dispute unauthorized charges, and watch for small test transactions or recurring charges.
How to spot an unsafe streaming site
Warning signs include no verifiable company identity or licensing information; rapidly changing domains; aggressive pop-ups or forced redirects; fake browser or antivirus alerts; requests to disable security features; prompts to install an extension, VPN, player, codec, or unofficial app; and demands for card details to “verify” free access. Also be cautious of login pages imitating known services and download buttons that deliver installers instead of normal playback.
A padlock or HTTPS means the connection to that domain is encrypted; it does not certify the operator, the content’s legality, or the site’s safety. Ad blockers may suppress some ads, and VPNs may serve privacy purposes, but neither makes an untrusted site safe from phishing, malicious files, or fraud. Keep browser protections such as Chrome Safe Browsing enabled; Google describes how Safe Browsing checks for threats including phishing and malware at its Safe Browsing site.

Copyright and safer ways to find a film
The original 123Movies was associated with unauthorized distribution of copyrighted films and television. Copyright rules and consequences depend on the country and the specific conduct, so it is not accurate to say every viewer everywhere will be prosecuted or fined. For consumers, the immediate concerns can also include fraud, privacy loss, unsafe downloads, and account theft. U.S. authorities have described malware, insecure connections, and payment-information risks in enforcement actions involving illicit streaming domains (U.S. Department of Justice).

For documentaries, the distributor, filmmaker, broadcaster, or a licensed platform may also list where a title can be watched.
