Spoilers for Invincible season 2, episode 5, including its apparent deaths and post-credits scene.
Episode 5 does not establish that Shrinking Rae survives, or that the show breaks comic canon by saving her. It shows Rae apparently dying after Komodo Dragon swallows her and her attempt to expand inside him fails. The surprise survival belongs to Allen the Alien: the post-credits scene reveals that he recovered after Thaedus ended his life support. The available episode coverage confirms the series is adapted from Robert Kirkman’s comics, but does not establish the issue-level comparison needed to claim that Rae’s fate has changed.
What happens to Shrinking Rae in episode 5?
In “This Must Come as a Shock,” the Earth-based Guardians Rex Splode, Dupli-Kate, and Shrinking Rae confront the Lizard League at a military base seized for its nuclear weapons. Rae shrinks and expands inside Salamander, killing him. Komodo Dragon then swallows her. When Rae tries to expand inside him, the attempt fails, and the episode depicts her as apparently dead.
That is what the episode shows at this point in the story; it is not proof of her eventual fate. The recaps from ComingSoon and ComicBook.com describe the sequence as Rae’s death, but they do not document a later survival or establish a comic-page comparison.

Who is the surprise survivor?
The episode’s explicit survival reveal comes after the credits. Allen the Alien has recovered after Thaedus ended his life support; Thaedus then sends him to recruit Mark. This is distinct from Rae’s apparent death in the Lizard League fight. The episode guide and The Escapist’s recap describe Allen’s recovery and the post-credits scene.
Does the episode break comic canon?
The available sources do not support that conclusion. They identify the animated series as based on Kirkman’s comics, but do not establish which issue episode 5 adapts or compare Rae’s precise comic fate with what happens on screen. Saying that the show saves Rae—or that her survival breaks canon—goes beyond what these sources verify.

To demonstrate a canon change, a comparison would need to establish whether the comic shows Rae dying or only being presumed dead, when and how any survival is revealed, and how the circumstances differ from the animated version. The episode’s apparent-death scene alone cannot answer those questions. Allen’s recovery should not be treated as evidence of a Rae-specific change.
What else sets up the episode’s cliffhanger?
The episode intercuts the Guardians’ fight on Earth with the Guardians in space, where the team is overwhelmed by the Sequids. Dupli-Kate is shown being killed in the Lizard League confrontation. Rex defeats two attackers but loses a hand; the episode ends with him facing King Lizard’s gun. Elsewhere, Mark returns from Thraxa after helping rebuild and brings his infant half-brother to Earth, while Donald confronts Cecil over his robotic body.
