Interview With the Vampire Is Here for Gay Rights and Gay Wrongs

Jacob Anderson argues that Interview With the Vampire can explore Louis and Lestat’s damaging relationship without making it stand for every queer couple or Black character.

Jacob Anderson’s view of AMC’s Interview With the Vampire is that queer representation need not make every relationship healthy or exemplary. The series can show Louis and Lestat as intensely drawn to each other and deeply damaging to one another without suggesting their relationship represents all queer couples—or all Black characters.

What Jacob Anderson says the show’s representation makes possible

In a Digital Spy interview published October 23, 2023, Anderson, who plays Louis de Pointe du Lac, pushed back on the idea that representation must always be “good” in the sense of depicting admirable relationships. “Something that can get misunderstood about representation is that all representation has to be good representation. It’s important actually that we don’t show a queer couple as a monolith or a Black character as a monolithic thing. I love that the show is willing to explore the multitudes of that relationship.”

His point is about the freedom to portray complexity, not a claim that harmful relationships should be celebrated. Louis and Lestat’s story can be queer and significant while remaining toxic. Anderson’s comments describe his perspective on this adaptation; they are not evidence of a broader audience consensus or a measurement of LGBTQ+ representation on television.

Louis and Lestat: desire without an idealized romance

Anderson describes the relationship as unhealthy, even as the characters remain powerfully attached to each other: “It is quite unhealthy, but they are so feverishly, manically in love with each other. They can’t be away from each other and they can’t be near each other at the same time.” The contradiction is central to his characterization of their bond: attraction and emotional damage coexist rather than resolving into a model romance.

The series makes their relationship more explicit on screen than the novels’ more oblique treatment of sex, a contrast highlighted in Linda Codega’s Gizmodo article of October 23, 2023. That is the article’s framing of the adaptation, not a comprehensive comparison of every novel and episode. Digital Spy also frames the series against the 1990s film adaptation, particularly around the prominence of the queer relationship; this offers a focused point of comparison, not a full assessment of either adaptation.

Playing Louis across two eras

Anderson told Digital Spy that he approaches present-day Louis and the earlier Louis as different people. He described tracking mannerisms across the two periods, treating changes in the character as part of the performance rather than simply playing one unchanging version of Louis at different ages. The interview also connects the relationship’s long duration to the characters’ vampire bond, an eternal dimension that intensifies rather than cures its dysfunction.

How Anderson described filming intimate scenes

Anderson recounted the practical rigs used in two scenes. These details are his account of production, not independent, firsthand reporting.

  • The “drink scene”: Anderson said he sat naked on a bicycle seat that moved like a seesaw, with a crew grip nearby.
  • The episode-six sex scene: He described a hydraulic mechanism beneath him during the scene in which Louis and Lestat have sex while Louis speaks to Claudia.

The production details underline the gap between an intimate scene’s on-screen effect and the physical mechanics used to film it; Anderson’s remarks do not establish anything beyond his recollection of those setups.

Where the story comes from

AMC’s series adapts Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, so the novel is a natural companion for readers who want to trace the story back to its source. The discussion of the show’s more explicit screen treatment refers to an adaptation choice; it should not be mistaken for a scene-by-scene analysis of Rice’s novels.
