Instagram has tested an “Ad Break” that makes some users wait for a short ad before they can continue browsing. But “can’t skip ads anymore” is not true for everyone: Meta confirmed a test in 2024, and later reports suggest it may have appeared more widely, but Meta has not announced a permanent, platform-wide change.
What is Instagram’s Ad Break?
An Ad Break is a reported interruption to browsing, rather than just another sponsored post in the feed. Users have described seeing a countdown and being unable to continue scrolling until it ends. In screenshots reported by TechCrunch, an in-app notice said: “Sometimes you may need to view an ad before you keep browsing.”
That is different from a regular Instagram ad, which appears in a particular placement and can generally be scrolled past or skipped according to that placement’s rules. Meta’s help documentation, for example, says ordinary ads between Reels can be skipped. The existence of an Ad Break test does not make every ad on Instagram unskippable.
What happened, and when?
- June 1, 2024: Users began sharing screenshots and complaints about being blocked from scrolling past an ad.
- June 3, 2024: Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that it was testing the format. Meta described the test as involving formats intended to create value for advertisers, not as a permanent change to Instagram.
- 2024 onward: Users continued to report occasional encounters with the feature.
- 2026: Secondary reporting and user posts suggested Ad Breaks might be appearing more often or on additional parts of the app. Those reports do not amount to a new official announcement or prove a global launch.
The distinction matters: Meta’s 2024 statement confirms an experiment. Later sightings suggest testing may have continued or expanded, but they do not establish that every account has received it.
Who sees it—and where?
There is no evidence that Ad Breaks are live for every Instagram user. Product tests can be limited by account, country, device, app surface, or session. One person may see a timer while another person using Instagram on the same day does not; neither experience settles how widely the test is running.

Reports have mentioned feed browsing, Stories, and Reels or other video-related browsing. Meta has not published a formal product specification that confirms all of those placements or explains exactly how eligibility is decided. A timer attached to a particular video ad can also be confused with an Ad Break that interrupts browsing more broadly.
Meta’s standard ad products include multiple formats and placements, such as photo, video, carousel, Stories, Explore, and Reels ads. Its Reels ad guidance describes ordinary Reels ads as skippable. The reported Ad Break is best understood as a separate test that may interrupt selected browsing experiences, not a replacement rule for every ad format.

How long are the ads?
There is no confirmed universal duration. Reports describe short countdowns, but the time may differ by test or placement, and Meta has not published a standard length for the experimental format. Treat specific timings shared in individual posts as accounts of those users’ experiences, not an official specification.
Is this the same as Meta’s ad-free subscription in Europe?
Not necessarily. Meta has separately described an EU free-with-ads experience in which some less-personalized ads may be unskippable for a few seconds. That policy belongs to the company’s European advertising and subscription model; it should not be used to explain every Ad Break report worldwide.

Meta also offers a paid no-ads subscription in supported markets. Availability and price vary by location, taxes, number of accounts, and whether a person subscribes through the web or an app store. Check the offer shown in your own Accounts Center for current local details. The available evidence does not show that every person who sees an Ad Break has been offered a subscription, declined one, or is being forced toward a paid plan. Why would Meta test a forced-viewing format?
The apparent commercial logic is that an interruption could make ad exposure more reliable: a viewer may be more likely to complete the ad, giving advertisers a clearer opportunity to reach them. That is an inference from how the format works and Meta’s stated interest in creating value for advertisers—not proof that Ad Breaks improve conversions, revenue, or campaign results. Meta has not published performance data for this specific test.

There is a trade-off. A forced wait might increase the chance that an ad is seen, while making Instagram feel more stop-start and prompting some people to close the app or associate irritation with the advertised brand. Those are plausible risks, not measured outcomes established by the available reports.

There is no documented universal setting that turns off the experimental format. If the app seems stuck, close and reopen Instagram, and check whether an update is available in case the behavior is a technical problem. Use Instagram’s in-app reporting tools if an ad is misleading, inappropriate, or malfunctioning.

You can review ad preferences and personalization controls, but those may affect which ads you see rather than remove ads or disable Ad Breaks. A no-ads subscription may be an option where Meta officially offers it; check its availability and price for your account and location. Meta’s terms and help information describe free access with ads and a paid no-ads option in supported markets. Changing settings, reinstalling the app, or switching devices is not a verified way to opt out of this test.
There is also no official Meta-supported ad-blocker setting documented as a way to defeat Ad Breaks. Browser extensions or network-level blockers may be incomplete, may disrupt site functions, and may not apply to Instagram’s mobile app. Avoid relying on unofficial tools as a guaranteed fix.

What should advertisers make of the test?
For advertisers, a forced-viewing format could be appealing if it creates a more dependable opportunity for exposure. But exposure alone does not establish attention, positive brand perception, or business results. A more interruptive placement could also produce frustration or avoidance, so any future evaluation should consider completed views alongside frequency, feedback, downstream actions, and conversion quality.
For now, Ad Breaks should be treated as an experimental delivery context, not a confirmed new product advertisers can select or buy. Meta’s public materials describe its broader Instagram ad formats, but the company has not documented Ad Break inventory or published test-specific performance results.
The bottom line
Instagram has tested short, unskippable Ad Breaks that can temporarily stop some users from continuing to browse. Meta confirmed the test in 2024, and 2026 reports suggest it may have resurfaced or expanded. But there is no verified evidence of a permanent global rule making every Instagram ad unskippable, and no documented universal opt-out.
