Instagram was reported to be testing a private dislike-style button for comments in February 2025—not launching a public dislike count for everyone. In the reported test, a down-arrow appeared beside a comment’s usual like control. The signal was intended for Instagram, not as a visible vote that other users or the commenter could track.
Current status: The available reporting establishes a limited test, not a permanent or global release. The material reviewed through August 18, 2026 does not confirm whether the feature later rolled out or remains available. Seeing—or not seeing—the control is not proof that every account has the same version of it.
What Instagram was testing
The reported feature was a down-arrow-style control attached to an individual comment. It was not described as a dislike button for posts, photos, Reels or Stories, and the reported design did not include a public dislike total.
According to Tech Times’ February 14, 2025 report, which described a tester screenshot and attributed confirmation of the test to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, the button was meant to give users a private way to signal that a comment was undesirable. The report characterized it as feedback to Instagram, rather than a public reaction. This account is based on secondary reporting; the available material does not include an official Instagram help page documenting the feature.

That distinction matters. A public downvote system lets other users see a score and treat it as a judgment by the crowd. Instagram’s reported experiment was closer to a private feedback signal: it could tell the platform that a user found a comment unhelpful, irrelevant, hostile, spammy or otherwise unwelcome, without displaying a running dislike count.
How it appeared for test users
In the reported test, the control appeared next to the familiar heart or like control on a comment. A test participant could open a post or Reel’s comments, find an individual comment and tap the down-arrow-style icon to send negative feedback.

- Tap it to send the reported private feedback signal.
This is a description of reported test behavior, not a guaranteed current interface path. The icon’s precise appearance and placement, what happened after tapping, and whether a second tap reversed the action were not established as universal behavior. There is no verified menu path or official current instructions in the available sources.

Who could see a dislike?
The reported design kept the feedback private. The commenter was not expected to see who had tapped the button, and other users were not shown a public dislike count. In that respect, it differed from Reddit-style visible voting and from a public dislike counter.
That does not mean the signal could have no effect. Instagram might use feedback in aggregate to inform comment ordering or quality systems. But the reports do not specify whether a particular comment’s ranking would change, whether the signal would affect all viewers or only some, or whether creators could see any data. No thresholds, weighting, time period or account-level safeguards were disclosed.
A dislike is not a report
A negative-feedback button and a report serve different purposes. A dislike could communicate that a comment is unwelcome or low quality; a report is the appropriate route when you believe content may violate Instagram’s rules. A private dislike should not be treated as an enforcement request or as a substitute for reporting abuse.

If a comment contains threats, hate speech, harassment, a scam or other potentially rule-breaking content, use Instagram’s reporting tools rather than relying on a dislike. If your goal is to avoid interacting with a person or to manage comments on your own content, account and comment controls are more direct options.

The available reports do not establish that one tap automatically removes, hides, collapses or demotes a comment. They describe ranking or quality effects as a possible use of aggregated feedback, not as a guaranteed result. A comment could remain visible after someone signals disapproval.
Even if the signal influenced ordering, the details are unknown: Instagram did not publicly disclose how much feedback would matter, how it would be weighed against likes and replies, or whether a change would apply broadly. If a comment appears higher or lower in a thread, it is not possible to attribute that change to dislikes from one observation alone. Engagement, personalization, safety filters, creator settings and experiments could also affect what people see.

Why collect private negative feedback?
Engagement does not always indicate that a comment is useful. A provocative or misleading remark can draw many replies, while a helpful comment may attract little attention. A private negative signal could give Instagram information that likes and replies alone cannot provide.
Possible uses include improving comment ordering, identifying repetitive or low-value replies, detecting spam or engagement bait, and helping quality or moderation systems assess content. These are plausible purposes described or suggested in coverage—not confirmed details of Instagram’s production algorithm. The reports do not say exactly how the platform would use the data.

But privacy does not eliminate the possibility of coordinated suppression: groups could still try to send negative feedback against a creator, brand, political opponent or minority viewpoint if that feedback affects visibility.

What could go wrong?
- Disagreement can look like low quality. A user may dislike a comment because they disagree with it, not because it is irrelevant, spam or abusive. Treating those reactions as an objective quality measure could bury legitimate dissent.
- Coordinated feedback could distort signals. Fan groups, rivals, bots or other organized users might target comments. A useful system would need to distinguish broad, genuine feedback from brigading.
- Ranking effects could be opaque. If feedback changes what people see but remains invisible, creators and commenters may not know why a comment became harder to find.
- The icon’s meaning could be unclear. A down arrow might mean “I dislike this,” “show me less,” “this breaks the rules” or simply “downvote.” Those requests are not interchangeable.
- It could create false confidence about moderation. A private signal is not, by itself, a formal review or proof of a policy violation.
There is a real difference between “I disagree with this,” “this is low quality,” “this may violate the rules” and “I do not want this account interacting with me.” One control cannot reliably express all four without clear definitions and safeguards.
If you see it—or do not
If a down-arrow appears in your Instagram comments, treat it as an experimental or account-specific control unless Instagram provides clear official information that it has been broadly released. Check that you are using the official app, and remember that the reported feature was intended as private feedback, not a public score.
If you do not see it, that does not necessarily mean your app is out of date. Limited tests can vary by account, region, platform or content type, and can be enabled or withdrawn server-side. You can update Instagram through your device’s official app store, restart the app and check comments on different posts or Reels. If it still is not there, assume your account is not included in a test—or that the experiment is no longer active. Do not sideload an unofficial app or use third-party tools claiming to unlock it.
For a comment you believe violates platform rules, report it. For personal protection or comment management, use the relevant block, restrict, hide or other available controls. Do not assume a dislike will make the comment disappear or trigger review.
What is—and is not—confirmed
February 2025 coverage supports the claim that Instagram tested a private, down-arrow-style feedback control for comments. It does not establish a universal rollout, an exact list of eligible accounts or countries, a supported app version, the feature’s permanent availability, or its precise ranking effect. The reporting available through August 18, 2026 does not confirm a global launch or settle whether the experiment is still active. Check Instagram’s current app and official announcements for any later change; do not mistake a test screenshot or another user’s account for proof of general availability.
