Instagram began rolling out public comments on Stories in September 2024. The change adds a visible conversation layer to an otherwise temporary format: eligible viewers may comment directly on a Story, while other viewers can see those comments according to the account’s audience and commenting settings.
This is different from a traditional Story reply, which remains a private message in Instagram Direct. Instagram still offers controls for disabling comments globally or on individual Stories.
What changed?
Before public Story comments, responding to a Story generally meant sending the creator a private reply. Instagram’s new feature moves some of that interaction onto the Story itself, allowing permitted viewers to participate in a conversation that may be visible to other people watching the same content.

In other words, Instagram did not replace Story replies or introduce the first way to react to Stories. It added a public-facing comment layer alongside private messaging.
Where do Story comments appear?
Comments appear in the Story experience rather than only in the creator’s inbox. They are intended for an authorized Story audience, but visibility is not necessarily identical for every viewer. The Story’s audience, the account’s commenting permissions, moderation filters and the removal of individual comments can all affect what someone sees.
“Public” should therefore be understood as “potentially visible to other eligible Story viewers,” not as a guarantee that every Instagram user can see every comment.
Story content normally disappears after 24 hours unless it is preserved as a Highlight, according to Instagram’s Help Center. The retrieved official guidance does not establish whether Story comments remain available, or in what form, when a Story is added to Highlights. Do not assume that a comment is permanently archived simply because the Story appears in a Highlight.

Who can comment?
A person must generally be able to view the Story, but viewing access alone does not guarantee permission to comment. The Story owner’s settings can limit or disable comments, and Instagram’s feature availability may vary by account, geography, app version and rollout status.
Some reports describe audience choices that can make comments available to a broader or narrower group of followers. Because the current official Help Center material confirms the ability to turn comments off but does not document every audience option in a universally applicable way, the safest description is eligible viewers permitted by the account’s settings.
Private replies are a separate feature. Disabling public Story comments does not necessarily disable private replies; message permissions and Story-comment permissions should be treated as different controls.

How to comment on a Story
Open an eligible Story and look for the Story comment control in the viewing interface. If no comment option appears, the owner may have disabled comments, your account may not be an eligible viewer, or the feature may not be available to your account or current app interface.

Instagram frequently changes labels and menu placement, so the absence of a control is not by itself evidence that the feature has been removed. Avoid posting personal information in a comment unless you are comfortable with the relevant Story audience seeing it.
How to turn off comments on all Stories
Instagram’s Help Center guidance, checked August 18, 2026, gives this route for disabling Story comments by default:
- Open Instagram’s Story composer.
- Tap Settings in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Story.
- Under Commenting, tap Allow comments.
- Select Off.
See the current Instagram Help Center instructions if the labels differ in your app. Settings can vary by account and version.
How to turn off comments for one Story
Before publishing
- Create or edit the Story.
- Tap Options in the upper-right.
- Tap Turn off Commenting.
After publishing
- Open the active Story.
- Tap Options in the lower-right.
- Tap Turn off commenting.
This selective approach is useful when an account normally welcomes conversation but wants extra control over a personal announcement, sensitive subject, professional update or sponsored post.
Why did Instagram add comments?
The clearest explanation is product strategy: Instagram wanted Stories to feel more communal. Stories are a major part of how people use the platform, and visible comments can turn isolated one-to-one replies into a shared conversation around announcements, polls, behind-the-scenes material, live events or informal questions.

That rationale should not be confused with proof that Story comments themselves increase engagement by a measured amount. The available reporting supports Instagram’s engagement objective and broader push toward conversation, but it does not establish a precise causal improvement.
Privacy implications
The most important change for viewers is a change in expectation. Someone accustomed to Story responses going privately to a creator may assume that a comment is also private. It is not safe to make that assumption.
- Do not include sensitive personal, financial, professional or location information in a Story comment.
- Remember that a private account or Close Friends audience reduces exposure but does not make a public comment a private message.
- Creators should review comment settings before posting personal or high-risk content.
- Turning off comments does not necessarily block private Story replies or other interactions.
- Public comments may bring useful discussion, but they can also attract spam, harassment, unwanted attention or accidental disclosures.
Instagram’s general privacy guidance explains how users control interactions with their content, but interaction controls differ between Stories, posts, Reels and messages. Consult Instagram’s privacy information for account-specific options.

For creators, the feature is not only an engagement option; it is another moderation surface. A practical approach is to choose the setting according to the Story rather than leaving comments on automatically for every post.

- Disable comments globally if the account does not want public Story discussions.
- Turn comments off selectively for sensitive or professionally consequential Stories.
- Remove inappropriate comments when Instagram provides the relevant option.
- Report abusive, threatening or scam-related comments.
- Use Instagram’s broader comment-filtering and Hidden Words tools where they apply.
- Restrict or block repeat offenders when ordinary moderation is insufficient.
Instagram’s Help Center page for Story comments links to deletion and reporting guidance, but the exact controls and tap sequence may change. Check the live app before relying on a specific moderation workflow.
If the comment option is missing
Several explanations are possible:
- The Story owner has turned comments off.
- Your account is outside the permitted audience.
- The feature has not reached your account.
- Your app version or interface presents the control differently.
- Instagram is testing or changing the feature in your market or account type.
Updating Instagram is a reasonable first check, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Check whether the option is absent only on one person’s Story or across eligible Stories, and review the owner’s settings where possible. If the problem persists, use Instagram’s in-app support tools rather than assuming that reinstalling the app will restore the feature.

The practical trade-off
Story comments make ephemeral content more conversational without requiring every viewer to open a private chat. That can be useful for community prompts and fast-moving discussions. The same visibility, however, creates more moderation work and makes accidental oversharing easier.
Viewers should treat a Story comment as a potentially public response. Creators should decide whether the value of visible conversation outweighs the privacy and moderation costs for each account and each Story.
