Instagram Blend is a private, invite-only Reels feed inside a one-to-one or group DM. It combines recommendations for the participating accounts, refreshes the feed daily, identifies which participant a Reel was recommended for, and lets members reply or react directly in the conversation. The feature makes discovering and discussing videos more social; it does not turn every Reel into a personal recommendation or replace deliberate sharing.
Blend launched for broader rollout on April 17, 2025 (U.S. time). It is a mobile-app feature, and Instagram’s Help Centre says it is not available on desktop. Access, labels and rollout can vary by account, device, app version and region.
What Instagram Reels Blend actually is
Blend creates a shared, personalized Reels stream for the people in an Instagram DM. You enter it from a conversation rather than from the main Reels tab, and participation is opt-in: someone must invite the other person or group members, who can accept or decline.
Instagram describes the feed as a combination of Reels recommended for people in the conversation, including videos it thinks participants may share an interest in. A “recommended for” label can indicate which participant Instagram used for a particular suggestion. That label is an algorithmic signal, not proof that the person watched, liked, shared or endorsed the Reel.

Blend is not a public playlist, a creator collaboration, a Remix, or a mathematically equal average of everybody’s likes. It is also not the same as forwarding a specific video. Instagram has not documented the exact weighting of viewing activity, interactions, recency, overlap or novelty, nor whether users can separately tune Blend’s recommendations.
How Blend works in a DM
Shared discovery
Participants browse a common conversation-scoped stream instead of separately searching their own Reels feeds and forwarding videos one at a time. The feed is personalized for the conversation, but the available documentation does not establish that every member sees identical inventory or ordering.
Daily refresh
Meta says Blend updates daily. That means recommendations are refreshed on a daily cadence; it does not promise that every item changes at midnight or that the feed will contain a completely new set of videos each day. Continuing interests can produce recurring topics or creators.
Replies and reactions
While watching a Reel in Blend, a participant can reply or use an emoji reaction. The response is sent to the associated DM, where other members can receive a notification and continue the discussion. This is the feature’s clearest social change: the reaction becomes part of an existing private conversation rather than remaining an isolated action in one person’s feed or a public comment thread.

One-to-one and group chats
A Blend can be created in a direct conversation or a group chat. A large group may get more variety, but it can also produce a noisier mix of recommendations and more notifications.
How to start a Blend
Use the Instagram mobile app. Instagram changes interface labels and icon placement regularly, so the wording may differ slightly between iPhone and Android.
- Open Instagram and go to DMs.
- Open a one-to-one conversation or a group chat.
- Tap the Blend icon in the upper-right area of the conversation.
- Choose the option to invite the other person or group members.
- Wait for participants to accept the invitation.
- Return to the conversation and tap the Blend icon again to open the shared Reels feed.

Why Blend feels more social
Traditional Reel sharing has a handoff: one person discovers a video, decides it is worth sending, and waits for a response. Blend moves part of that discovery into the shared space itself.

- It exposes interests: the “recommended for” label can reveal the kinds of humor, hobbies, fandoms or topics Instagram is showing to someone in the chat.
- It creates immediate prompts: replies and emoji reactions land in the DM where the group already talks.
- It supports group rituals: couples, friends and hobby groups can check a refreshed stream and respond together.
The trade-off is intentionality. Manual sharing says, “I specifically chose this for you.” Blend says, “Instagram thinks this may suit someone here.” That can produce more discovery, but it can feel less personal.
Privacy and recommendation caveats
Blend is restricted to the participating members of its DM or group chat, so it is conversation-scoped rather than a public feed. The Reels themselves may still be public Instagram posts, however, and the original creator’s audience and account privacy settings continue to apply.
Do not treat a label as a friend’s statement of taste. It does not establish that the person watched, liked, shared or approved the video, and the available sources do not show that Blend exposes a complete watch history. Likewise, there is no documented guarantee that leaving a Blend erases earlier reactions, notifications or messages. Leaving the Blend is separate from leaving the DM.
Instagram has not clearly documented controls for removing one Reel from a Blend, blocking a topic only within Blend, changing one participant’s influence, resetting the feed or viewing a complete participant-by-participant recommendation history.

Blend versus sending a Reel manually

Instagram’s Remix tools are separate creation features, as Meta explains in its Reels Remix announcement. TechCrunch likewise describes Blend as an additional layer over existing sharing rather than a replacement for forwarding: launch coverage.
Who should use Blend?
Good candidates
- Couples or friends who already send each other many Reels.
- Group chats with a shared hobby, fandom, inside joke or travel plan.
- People who want recommendations beyond what they individually discover.
- Groups comfortable with limited visibility into the recommendation themes Instagram associates with each member.
When manual sharing is better
- The group has very different interests and the feed becomes noisy.
- You want the message, “I chose this specifically for you.”
- Members do not want recommendation labels to invite inferences about their tastes.
- The chat already has an efficient habit of forwarding selected videos.
- Additional reaction notifications would be distracting.
Common problems and fixes
The Blend icon is missing
Possible causes include an account that has not received the rollout, an outdated app, an unsupported conversation type, desktop access, regional availability or an interface test. Try this sequence:
- Update Instagram through the device’s official app store.
- Close and reopen the DM, then check the upper-right controls.
- Try both a one-to-one chat and a standard group chat.
- Confirm that you are using the mobile app, not Instagram’s desktop site.
- If the icon remains absent, wait for account rollout or report the problem through Instagram’s in-app Help area.
Reinstalling Instagram is not a guaranteed way to activate a feature that has not reached the account.
The recommendations seem irrelevant
Blend is algorithmic and may reflect previous viewing or interaction patterns rather than a consciously chosen current interest. Instagram has not published a Blend-specific reset procedure, so do not assume that a hidden reset or retraining control exists.

A participant sees different videos
Personalization or different ordering may explain the difference. The public documentation does not establish whether all members receive the same inventory, so treat this as an account-specific behavior to verify in the app rather than a documented guarantee.
Reactions do not appear in chat
- Make sure the reaction was made inside the Blend viewer.
- Confirm that you are still a participant and that the DM works normally.
- Update Instagram and restart the app.
- If the problem continues, use Instagram’s in-app reporting flow. General troubleshooting guidance is available in the Instagram Help Centre.
The measured verdict
Blend makes the act of finding and discussing Reels more social by placing algorithmic discovery inside a DM and attaching responses to the conversation. It does not make the videos inherently more meaningful, reveal a friend’s complete preferences, or eliminate the value of a carefully chosen forward.
Use it with an active couple or friend group that enjoys browsing together. Prefer manual sharing when personal intent matters more than novelty, and leave or ignore the Blend when the feed becomes noisy or its visibility feels intrusive.
