Instagram’s hidden emoji Pong-style game is played in Direct Messages, not in the main feed. Technology outlets reported it in March 2024; whether it is available to every account today is unclear. To try it, send an emoji on its own in a DM and tap the message.
How to find and play Instagram’s emoji game

Open the Instagram mobile app and go to your Direct Messages inbox.

Open a conversation where you can send a message.

Send one emoji as a standalone message. This is the simplest way to test the feature; reports also say tapping an emoji received from someone else can work.

Tap the emoji message. If the feature is available to your account and app, the game should open.

The standalone-message method is a practical test, not a guaranteed universal instruction. Reports do not establish that every emoji, conversation type, account, or app build behaves the same way.
What the game is—and what it is not
The emoji you tapped becomes the ball, and a paddle at the bottom lets you keep it from dropping. Reports say the emoji moves faster as the score rises. That makes it a simple, solo score-chasing reflex game inspired by Pong, rather than a confirmed head-to-head match. There is no verified leaderboard, reward system, or maximum score.

Different emojis can generally be used as the game object, though behavior may vary by emoji and app version. The feature does not require a separate game download. It is Pong-inspired; the available reporting does not establish an Atari license or partnership. Creative Bloq’s March 2024 coverage describes the paddle and increasing pace.
When did Instagram add it, and does it still work?
The game surfaced in technology coverage between March 7 and March 12, 2024. That is when it was reported, not a verified official launch date: the exact date it was added is unknown. Android Central confirmed it on Android app version 321.0.0.39.106 at the time, but that historical version is not a current requirement.
There is no dedicated Meta announcement or current official availability statement establishing that all Instagram users can play it in 2026. Some users still report finding it, while others say it does not launch. The evidence does not establish whether that inconsistency is due to account, app version, platform, region, or a change to availability. Recent user discussion reflects both continued sightings and failures, but is not an official status notice.

Android was specifically confirmed in 2024; the available reporting does not provide a reliable current compatibility matrix for iPhone and Android. Meta’s Instagram product-news page does not provide a dedicated Pong availability announcement.

On Android, you can try clearing Instagram’s cache. Avoid clearing app data unless you know your login details.

If the game still does not open, it may simply not be available to your account or app build. Do not use unofficial APKs, “unlock” services, or a VPN as a supposed fix; none is established as a solution, and third-party tools can put your device or account at risk.

The game launches from a DM, not from Instagram’s feed. You can separately share a screenshot of a score in a Story, post, or chat, but that does not make the game a feed feature or prove that Instagram provides a native leaderboard.

Because activation involves sending a real message, the emoji can have ordinary inbox and notification consequences. Avoid sending repeated emojis as a surprise challenge: the recipient may not know they were intended to start a game. If you plan to send several, explain first. Instagram’s broader DM features and private-messaging safety controls may also affect whether messages are delivered or seen.
If the hidden game is unavailable
If tapping an emoji does not work, there is no confirmed setting or workaround that guarantees access. A dedicated Pong game from an official app store or a browser game from a reputable publisher is a more dependable option for playing; check its publisher and current permissions before installing. On Instagram, you can still use message effects, stickers, or other available interactive features for a casual exchange.
