Meta has not publicly confirmed a standalone Reels app. On February 26, 2025, The Information reported that Instagram was considering one; the proposal was not an announced product, public test or launch. In the public product moves documented through August 16, 2026, Meta instead emphasized making Reels more prominent inside Instagram.
What was actually reported about a separate Reels app?
The Information reported on February 26, 2025, that Instagram chief Adam Mosseri had discussed the possibility of a standalone Reels app with staff. The account came from an unnamed person who heard the remarks. Meta did not immediately comment to the outlets covering the report. That is evidence of an idea under consideration—not evidence that an app was in development, being tested publicly, or scheduled to launch.
A follow-up report said the initiative was internally called Project Ray. The reported goals included improving recommendations for new users and existing users, especially in the United States, and distributing more videos up to three minutes long. Those details were attributed to reporting, not to a public Meta product specification. The Information’s original report and TechCrunch’s account of Project Ray describe the proposal.
The distinction matters: “could launch” describes a possibility, not a commitment. No launch date, app-store listing, confirmed public test, official product name or details about account migration were established in the reporting.

Why would Meta consider separating Reels?
A more direct TikTok alternative
The idea surfaced amid uncertainty about TikTok’s future in the United States. A dedicated app opening directly into short video could present a more immediate TikTok alternative than Reels embedded in Instagram’s broader social network. The timing and competitive context were part of the original coverage, including Economic Times reporting.
A focused viewing and recommendation experience
Instagram brings together photos, Reels, Stories, messages, shopping and recommended posts. A separate video app could give Meta a simpler full-screen viewing experience and let it tune onboarding and recommendations specifically for short-form video. That is a plausible product rationale, not a confirmed explanation from Meta. The trade-off is that a new app would have to earn attention and build habits rather than inheriting all of Instagram’s daily use.
More room for video creation
The standalone-app idea also appeared alongside Meta’s broader investment in video. Meta has released Edits, a separate video-editing app; that makes it relevant to Reels production, but it is a creator tool, not a separate Reels social network. The Information’s analysis of why a Reels app might make sense connected the proposal to this wider creator-video push.

Why might Meta keep Reels inside Instagram?
Instagram already supplies the accounts, social connections, creators, messaging, discovery and advertising infrastructure a video feed needs. Keeping Reels inside the app also makes it easier for a viewer to move between a Reel, its creator’s profile, Stories and direct messages. A separate app could create another destination to download and manage while fragmenting viewers and engagement across two products.
For creators, a new destination would raise practical questions before it offered any clear advantage: would followers carry over, could a post reach both apps, would analytics be separate, and would there be a distinct monetization program? None of those terms was established for a proposed Reels app. Meta would also face a two-sided cold start: viewers need compelling videos, while creators need a meaningful audience to justify posting.
Meta has tried video products outside Instagram before. IGTV began as a standalone destination before its app was discontinued and the experience was folded back into Instagram, as Forbes reported. Meta’s Lasso short-video app also failed to gain traction and was shut down, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. These precedents do not prove what Meta would do with Reels, but they show that a separate app does not automatically inherit a platform’s audience.

What has Meta publicly done instead?
Made Instagram more Reels-first in a test
On September 28, 2025, Meta announced a Reels-first Instagram experience test in India. The company said some users would open directly into Reels; Stories would remain at the top, while navigation gave more prominence to Reels and direct messages. The test also included swipe-based movement between sections and “All,” “Friends” and “Latest” views for followed accounts. These were changes within Instagram, not evidence of a separate Reels app. See Meta’s announcement of the India test for its described design and availability.
Invested in recommendations and original posts
Meta said that in the United States, 75% of Instagram recommendations in the fourth quarter of 2025 came from original posts, following a 10-percentage-point increase in the prevalence of original content. It also said nearly 10% of daily Reels views came from content made in Edits. These are Meta’s own figures, not independently audited measurements; the company’s statement is at Meta’s 2026 AI and performance update.

Expanded video tools and formats within its apps
Meta’s 2025 review described Edits as a standalone editing app while presenting Reels as part of Instagram’s continuing product development. In June 2026, TechCrunch reported that Meta was testing “Series,” which organizes episodic Reels into a hub on Instagram and Facebook for select creators. Both developments point to investment around video, but neither confirms a standalone Reels viewing app. Meta’s year-end product review and TechCrunch’s report on the Series test describe those separate efforts.

Meta’s Vibes experiment is another distinct product, not a Reels spin-off: TechCrunch described it as a standalone experience for AI-generated short videos connected to Meta AI. Its existence does not establish that a conventional Reels app has launched. TechCrunch’s Vibes report explains the distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a Reels app appeared, what could happen to Instagram Reels?
The original proposal did not establish whether Reels would remain available in Instagram, move elsewhere, or work across both apps. Several product models are possible, but none has been confirmed:
| Possible model | What it would mean | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Parallel apps | Reels stays in Instagram while the new app offers another way to watch and publish. | Not established by public reporting. |
| Migration | The standalone app becomes the primary Reels destination, with reduced access inside Instagram. | Not established by public reporting. |
| Cross-posting | Creators publish once and distribute to Instagram and a separate app. | Not established by public reporting. |
| Different audiences | Instagram emphasizes existing social connections while the new app emphasizes algorithmic discovery. | Not established by public reporting. |
| Limited test, then withdrawal | Meta tests a separate experience and later folds it back into Instagram if it does not gain traction. | A possible outcome, not a reported decision. |
Do not assume that Instagram followers, saved videos, drafts, messages, account settings or creator monetization would transfer automatically. A future official announcement or app listing would need to spell out those details.

What would a separate app mean for viewers, creators and advertisers?
Viewers
A dedicated feed could make short-video discovery faster and less tangled with Instagram’s other features. It could also mean installing another app, managing another set of notifications and encountering a feed with less of the social context users get from Instagram. Whether saved items, follows or preferences would carry over is unknown.
Creators
A new destination might offer additional reach, video-specific analytics or stronger creation tools. But those benefits would depend on actual audience growth, publishing workflows and monetization terms. A second feed could instead mean duplicate work, more moderation and community management, and uncertainty about which posts the recommendation system favors. No creator-payment terms, exclusivity requirements or transfer rules were verified for the proposal.
Advertisers
A separate product could eventually offer a more clearly defined short-video advertising environment and incremental reach. It could also divide campaign reporting and audiences between Instagram and another app. Until a product, audience and ad inventory are confirmed, advertisers have no basis to treat a proposed app as an available placement.
How to tell whether the idea becomes a real product
A meaningful change in status would require evidence beyond another anonymous-source headline. Look for a Meta newsroom announcement, an official App Store or Google Play listing, a confirmed test with a named region or eligible audience, or product documentation for creators and advertisers. A launch date and clear rules for accounts, followers, saved content and publishing would distinguish a usable product from an internal proposal.
On the public record documented through August 16, 2026, the most defensible reading is that Meta considered a separate Reels app in 2025 but did not publicly confirm one. Its announced moves instead made Instagram itself more video-forward, while Edits and Vibes addressed different parts of Meta’s video strategy.
