In a separate Indiana case, she pleaded guilty in connection with the 2016 death of her husband, Jason Cochran. The cases were investigated in different states and ended in different legal outcomes.
Who was Kelly Cochran?
Kelly Cochran lived with her husband, Jason, in Iron River, Michigan. Chris Regan, a co-worker, disappeared in October 2014 after going to the couple’s home. Investigators learned that Regan and Kelly were having an affair and began examining the couple’s possible connection to his disappearance. ABC News reports that the investigation initially lacked remains and sufficient evidence to charge them.
What happened to Chris Regan?
After Regan vanished, Kelly and Jason returned to their hometown of Hobart, Indiana. The investigation later gained a connection to that city when Jason died there in February 2016. ABC News says an anonymous tip suggested his death might be connected to the missing-person case, and an autopsy classified his death as a homicide.
Former Hobart detective Jeremy Ogden pursued the connection through repeated conversations with Kelly. ABC News describes an unusual investigative tactic: a message reading “CHRIS IS HERE” carved into a tree stump. Kelly first told investigators that Jason had killed Regan, then later admitted her own role and led authorities to Regan’s remains in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, according to ABC News.

Kelly’s statements to investigators were not the end of the legal story. She later disputed the prosecution’s account at trial and maintained her innocence, but a Michigan jury convicted her of first-degree murder in Regan’s death in 2017.
Did Kelly Cochran kill her husband?
Jason’s death was handled separately in Indiana. ABC7 Chicago reported that investigators’ account involved heroin injection and strangulation. In 2018, Kelly pleaded guilty in connection with Jason’s death and received a 65-year Indiana sentence, according to ABC7 Chicago. Fox News later described her combined sentence as life plus 65 years. The Michigan conviction concerns Regan; the Indiana guilty plea concerns Jason.

Was there a murder pact?
Fox News reported an account that Kelly and Jason agreed on their wedding night to kill a lover if either had an affair. That story should be treated as an allegation, not an established finding. Former detective Jeremy Ogden told Fox News: “Whether it’s true or not, that’s between her and him and for us to try to figure it out in the end.” Fox News also reported Ogden’s uncertainty about whether the pact was real.
AOL’s account of Kelly’s 2017 trial testimony says she regarded the statement as a joke and did not take it seriously. The reported pact offers one possible account of motive, but the available reporting does not establish it as a court finding. AOL

Which claims remain unsubstantiated?
Stories about additional victims and a barbecue involving Regan’s remains should not be repeated as established facts. AOL’s 2026 summary says investigators found no evidence supporting claims of additional killings, and authorities found no evidence for the barbecue rumor; it was not part of the prosecution’s case. Those accounts are distinct from the convictions and plea reported in the two cases.
Where is Kelly Cochran now?
The Michigan Department of Corrections’ OTIS offender search page provides a general search form, not a confirmed record establishing Kelly Cochran’s present facility or custody status. The news reports describe her sentences, but those reports do not independently confirm where she is held now.
