Choose Portrait Mode before you start a Talk Studio stream or recording. Streamlabs says you cannot switch between portrait and landscape after the session begins. Portrait Mode is a canvas layout setting; you do not need a new phone or webcam just to enable it.
Turn on Portrait Mode before you start

Open Streamlabs Talk Studio and add yourself to the main canvas.

Find the phone-shaped Portrait Mode icon among the video layouts, next to the layouts control.

Select Portrait Mode. Check the canvas to make sure the host and any guests are composed vertically.

Only after checking the orientation, start your broadcast or recording. Streamlabs says the layout cannot be switched once either has started.
Streamlabs describes Portrait Mode as supported on all devices. Screen and video sharing are supported in the portrait workflow. Live streams record in a 9:16 ratio, and displayed nametags are not shown in portrait mode.

Choose portrait or landscape for the destination

For Instagram or Facebook, Streamlabs’ browser-streaming guide describes portrait as 9:16 (1080 × 1920p). Treat that as the guide’s format description, not a guarantee that every destination, account, or configuration currently accepts the same setup.
Check browser and upload requirements
Streamlabs’ Talk Studio getting-started guidance lists a stable internet connection, Chrome or Safari, and at least 5 Mbps upload as setup requirements. Its resolution guidance gives these upload figures:

These are Streamlabs’ stated requirements and recommendations, not a promise of a particular stream result. Connection stability, network congestion, and other factors can still affect a session.
Instagram: confirm eligibility and destination setup
Streamlabs’ Instagram browser-streaming guide, last updated August 11, 2025, states that only public Instagram accounts with 1,000 followers or more are eligible to go live. Instagram’s rules and feature availability can change, so check the current requirements in Instagram before planning a broadcast around that threshold.

If using Instagram as a custom RTMP destination, Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance says to press Portrait Mode before choosing Go Live; otherwise, that setup may display in vertical mode by default. Destination options and account settings can vary. Do not assume that third-party RTMP-key arrangements are a universal, officially supported way to broadcast to Instagram.

The stream or recording started in the wrong orientation: Talk Studio does not allow switching portrait and landscape after starting. End the session, select the intended layout on the canvas, check the framing, and start a new session.

The Instagram RTMP setup is showing the wrong orientation: Select Portrait Mode before choosing Go Live, as Streamlabs advises for this configuration.

The portrait composition looks cramped: Review the canvas before going live. Portrait uses a vertical 9:16 frame, so reposition the host and guests for a tall layout rather than relying on a horizontal composition.

Nametags are missing: Streamlabs says displayed nametags are not shown in portrait mode. If viewers need names on screen, account for that before you choose the layout.

Video quality is unstable: Check that you are using Chrome or Safari and compare your upload speed with Streamlabs’ stated resolution guidance. Meeting the figures alone does not guarantee a stable result.
