Inside Out 2 makes adolescence feel like a renovation in progress: new emotions arrive, Riley’s inner world is thrown into comic disarray, and Anxiety starts taking charge. The sequel is visually inventive and emotionally effective, though it does not feel quite as imaginatively boundless as the first film.
What is Inside Out 2 about?
Riley is now a newly minted teenager, and the emotions who have long run Headquarters are unprepared for the changes ahead. Anxiety arrives alongside Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui, complicating the familiar team’s efforts to guide Riley through a changing social and emotional landscape. The premise gives the sequel a strong comic engine: an inner-world workplace that must adapt while its owner is changing faster than its operators can keep up. Mann described the experience of being a teenager as “a renovation” that is “chaotic.” That idea shapes both the story’s bustle and its visual gags.
Is Inside Out 2 as good as the first one?
It is a lively, affecting sequel, but not quite as startlingly expansive. The first film’s central conceit already made the mind a place audiences wanted to explore; this one builds on that foundation with new emotions and a more unstable sense of identity. The best moments make that change legible without losing the humor.

In his review for The Associated Press, Jake Coyle gave the film three stars out of four. He notes that Riley feels more like the protagonist this time, even as Anxiety increasingly calls the shots, and that the evolving Belief System gives the story a way to visualize changes in Riley’s sense of self. Coyle’s reservation is that the sequel’s imaginative reach feels less boundless than the original’s. That is a useful distinction: Inside Out 2 is not simply a repeat, but much of its freshness comes from developing an already familiar world rather than discovering one from scratch. How does the film portray Anxiety and adolescence?
Anxiety is not just another colorful control-room personality. Her urge to anticipate problems and prepare for every possibility becomes a source of both comedy and conflict as she tries to steer Riley through adolescence. The film turns that pressure into an accessible metaphor: an emotion can be understandable and useful in some situations, yet become disruptive when it dominates.

Pixar says the filmmakers met with experts, read books and spoke with psychologists while developing the film’s portrayal of changes in the teenage brain. That production context does not make the story a clinical account of anxiety or a model of every teenager’s experience. The characters and control-room mechanics are storytelling devices, not mental-health guidance. Pixar’s production feature also describes the Belief System, a visual expression of Riley’s identity. Production designer Jason Deamer said nine departments worked together on that sequence, helping turn an abstract inner shift into a tangible part of the film’s world.
What works especially well in the animation?
The movie’s biggest visual opportunity is making internal change visible. Its mind-world can turn a thought, a social worry or a shift in identity into a place or process the audience can watch. The Belief System is a particularly apt example: rather than explain Riley’s evolving self only through dialogue, the film gives that change a visual form.

Riley’s hockey story also grounds the imaginative machinery in a concrete adolescent ambition. Pixar notes that hockey is significant to her story; editor Maurissa Horwitz said she watched more than a dozen hockey-focused films while researching those scenes. The blend of a specific external goal and a busy internal world helps keep the film from becoming only a string of clever emotional metaphors.
Is Inside Out 2 appropriate for kids?
The Associated Press lists the film as PG for some thematic elements and gives its runtime as 96 minutes. Its puberty and anxiety themes may prompt questions from children, especially around why someone might worry intensely or feel out of control. Parents can use those moments as a starting point for conversation, while keeping in mind that the movie simplifies emotional experiences for an animated story and is not a substitute for professional advice.

The Associated Press reported that Inside Out 2 opened to an estimated $295 million worldwide in June 2024: $155 million domestically and an estimated $140 million internationally.
