Why does Inside Out 2 add new emotions?
The sequel returns to Riley’s mind at the point when adolescence begins changing her relationships, priorities, and understanding of herself. Headquarters therefore has to accommodate emotions that were not central to her childhood experience.
Anxiety’s instinct is to anticipate future problems. Envy focuses on comparison, Ennui on detached boredom, and Embarrassment on self-consciousness. Together, the new emotions broaden the film’s view of adolescence beyond the original five. The central tension comes from Anxiety trying to prepare Riley for every possible future while Joy and the original team struggle to understand how Riley’s emotional system is changing.
