The move was announced in August 2025; follow-up reporting said the family moved during the children’s autumn half-term. The description “forever home” reflects reported long-term intentions, not a guarantee.
Where did William and Catherine move?
Their new residence is Forest Lodge, an eight-bedroom property in Windsor Great Park. Their previous home was Adelaide Cottage, where the family had lived since moving from Kensington Palace to Windsor in August 2022. BBC News reported the planned move; The Independent later reported that it had taken place.
When did the family move?
On 16 August 2025, BBC News reported that the family planned to move to Forest Lodge and hoped to do so by Christmas. A later Independent report placed the move during the children’s half-term in autumn 2025. Vogue subsequently reported that they moved in November 2025; that month is Vogue’s account rather than a date specified in the BBC’s original announcement.
Why leave Adelaide Cottage?
BBC News attributed the “fresh start” rationale to an unnamed royal source, who said the move offered “an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter.” The BBC also reported that the family had experienced difficult times at Adelaide Cottage. This was an anonymous source’s explanation, not a named, on-the-record statement by William or Catherine.

- Round Tower by Fraser Creations
- Model is @ 6 x 4
- Finely detailed and hand painted
- Part of the Heritage Collection
The reported contrast between the homes is limited but clear: Forest Lodge has eight bedrooms, compared with four at Adelaide Cottage, and is also within Windsor. Those details do not establish the couple’s private preferences or every reason for the move.
Is Forest Lodge their “forever home”?
BBC News reported that the family intended to make Forest Lodge their long-term home, including after William and Catherine become King and Queen. “Forever home” is a shorthand for that reported intention; it should not be read as a guarantee about how long they will live there.

What is Forest Lodge like?
The property is a Grade II-listed mansion. Vogue describes it as Georgian in style and dating to the 1750s; those architectural details are Vogue’s account. Vogue also reported features including a tennis court, paddock, small lake and marble fireplaces.
BBC News described original stonework, plaster cornices and ceiling decoration, and a half-barrel-vaulted hallway ceiling in images associated with earlier restoration work. In 2025, planning permission was granted for minor interior and exterior alterations. The BBC said the decision notice referred to removing a window and work to a fireplace.

What is known about the work and its cost?
BBC News reported that Forest Lodge underwent £1.5 million of restoration work in 2001. That is the reported cost of the earlier restoration, not the cost of the Wales family’s move or recent alterations. In its account of that restoration, the BBC also said the house had been put on the rental market for £15,000 a month; that historical listing figure is not the family’s current rent, which has not been specified.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is the move funded?
According to BBC News, the move is privately funded, the family will pay market rent, and work at Forest Lodge will not be paid for from the Sovereign Grant. The report did not provide an itemized account of the move or renovation costs. It also said the family would not have live-in staff, as at Adelaide Cottage.
