Donda Academy was a private Christian school founded by Kanye West in 2020 and named for his mother, educator Donda West. Its public pitch combined worship and core academic subjects with creative and practical activities. Former employees later described a far less structured experience and sued over alleged educational, safety, and workplace failures; those claims were contested, and the school was reported permanently closed in June 2024.
What was Donda Academy?
West founded the school in late 2020, initially calling it Yeezy Christian Academy. The Los Angeles Times described his ambition as developing future leaders through creativity, self-sufficiency, and the Gospel. The school was private and Christian, and it was not accredited. Accreditation was not required for California private schools, though it ordinarily indicates that an outside body has reviewed a school’s program. The Times’ 2025 investigation traced its creation and changing public description.
Donda reported 21 students for the 2021–22 school year in its private-school affidavit filed with the California Department of Education, according to the Times. That filing is a dated enrollment snapshot, not a measure of later attendance or of how many students received each advertised offering.
What did the school say students would learn?
Donda’s website described a program that joined worship and core subjects with visual arts, film, world languages, and parkour. The school also promoted a 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Those were the school’s stated offerings, not an independent audit confirming that every subject was regularly taught.

Interview-based reporting added examples of hands-on activities: a former educator told the Times that students used a hydroponic farm, took cooking lessons, and designed sneakers. Donda also had a gospel choir that performed with West’s Sunday Service. These accounts suggest the school’s appeal was not limited to conventional classroom instruction, but they do not establish a uniform curriculum or experience for every student.
What did former employees say happened in practice?
In interviews with the Times, former educators described a gap between the school’s aspirations and its day-to-day organization. One former educator, who was not named in the report, put it this way: “The idea of the school was magnificent. The execution was chaos.” Former fifth-grade teacher Chekarey Byers said: “Donda didn’t really have any structure. They had books that they had bought that were just sitting on shelves. Kids were just playing all day. It was just a free-for-all.” Those are individual accounts, not a published evaluation of the school across all grades or years.

Former educator Beulah McLoyd said of her own departure, “At one point, philosophical differences arose.” The Times reported that the school’s filings listed 82 students and then 36 students for successive years, but those separate government-filing snapshots do not by themselves explain why enrollment changed. The reviewed reporting also did not establish an independently verified academic achievement, graduation, or college-placement statistic.
How did the Donda Doves fit in?
The Donda Doves recruited prominent high-school basketball players, but the team’s operation was distinct from the school’s core K–12 program. The Times’ 2025 investigation reported that many players lived in an apartment complex with chaperones, trained at a gym, and took academic courses online. That arrangement should not be confused with ordinary attendance in Donda’s campus-based school program.

What did former employees allege in court?
The teachers’ lawsuit
In 2023, former teachers Cecilia Hailey and Chekarey Byers sued West and the school. Their complaint alleged that educational, safety, and health rules were ignored, and that they faced retaliation after raising concerns. Among the allegations were omissions from history instruction and problems involving sanitation, medication storage, supervision, and meals. These are claims made by plaintiffs; they are not findings that every allegation occurred or applied to every school day. West’s lawyer characterized the teachers’ claims as “false” and “sensational,” a denial rather than a court determination.
The assistant principal’s lawsuit and later case developments
Former assistant principal Isaiah Meadows separately alleged unsafe building conditions, including an unglazed skylight and exposed wiring, and brought wage and termination claims. The Times reported in December 2024 that a judge entered a default judgment against the school in that suit. That outcome in Meadows’ case should not be treated as proof of every allegation in other employees’ lawsuits.

The Times reported in April 2025 that Meadows and three former teachers had confidentially settled their two lawsuits by March 2025, while three other former-employee suits remained pending at the time of publication. In the Hailey, Byers, and Meeks matter, a May 3, 2024 tentative ruling sustained a demurrer to two causes of action against Ye and granted leave to amend. That procedural ruling addressed those causes of action at that stage; it was not a finding that all claims were true or false. The current status of suits reported as pending in April 2025 is not established here.

The school’s history included a confusing temporary closure announcement. On October 27, 2022, Donda announced it would close for the rest of the 2022–23 school year, then reportedly reversed course and said it would reopen. That episode was not the final shutdown.

In November 2021, the school moved from Calabasas to the former Stoneridge Preparatory School site in Simi Valley; later reporting placed it in Chatsworth. The Times reported that the California Department of Education recorded Donda Academy as permanently closed in June 2024, with no public announcement reported by the newspaper. The closure date is based on the Times’ account of the agency record.
What the record does—and does not—show
Donda’s public identity centered on an unusual mix of Christian worship, academics, creative work, and practical activities. Accounts from former educators and employee lawsuits raise substantial questions about how that vision was implemented, but interviews, complaints, and procedural court rulings are different kinds of evidence and should not be collapsed into a single verdict. Publicly reported filings also cited about $10 million in funding across 2021–2024 and more than $1 million spent annually on school trips; those figures come from federal tax filings summarized by the Times, not an independent review of educational results.
