Joseph Habedank’s path from addiction to recovery became part of the story he tells through gospel music. He has described prescription pain medication use beginning after a throat ulcer while touring with The Perrys in 2008; later, he built a solo career around songs shaped by recovery and Christian faith. The Recording Academy lists him as a two-time Grammy nominee, with no wins.
How addiction entered Habedank’s story
Habedank began in gospel music as the lead singer-songwriter for The Perrys. In a 2019 feature, the Gospel Music Association reported that a throat ulcer he developed while touring in 2008 introduced him to prescription pain medication. That is Habedank’s reported experience, not a general account of pain treatment.
The GMA feature and a Fox News interview connect his addiction and recovery to help from his wife, Lindsay, and MusiCares. Fox reported that MusiCares helped him enter rehabilitation and provided Grammy-related travel support. The accounts do not establish the precise scope or conditions of that assistance.
Where recovery began—and what is known about it
Cumberland Heights identifies its Nashville facility as the place where Habedank’s recovery began. In a 2025 interview, he discussed recovery support, faith, and music. The published accounts establish that broad arc, but do not provide an exact rehabilitation admission date or a detailed treatment timeline.

Habedank has credited faith as part of his own recovery. That is his account of what helped him; it should not be taken as a universal prescription for addiction treatment.
How recovery shaped his music
The Basement and autobiographical songwriting
Habedank’s official biography presents his 2024 album autobiography as a chronological musical account of his life through his present-day sobriety. He said he wanted the songs to connect his experiences with listeners’ lives: “What I’ve always found is that when I write something about my life — whether it’s a song about losing my grandmother or it’s a song about my addiction — it somehow resonates with people.”

Daywind Records framed the 12-track album around a decade of sobriety when it announced the release in 2024. Its song “The Basement” gives recovery a place in the album’s personal narrative. Habedank explained the title this way: “One, the basement’s at the bottom of a home; and two, it describes the last part of my story, which is recovery, and that’s where I live now.”
I’m Free: Songs That Wrote My Story
Gaither Music Group described I’m Free: Songs That Wrote My Story as a 12-track recovery-to-redemption collection released in 2024 with a companion DVD. Gaither’s artist page lists the DVD and CD. Unlike autobiography, which is presented as a chronological account, I’m Free gathers songs around the recovery-and-redemption theme.

What his Grammy record actually shows
The Recording Academy lists two Best Roots Gospel Album nominations for Habedank: Resurrection at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and Deeper Oceans at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. The same record lists zero wins. He is therefore a two-time Grammy nominee, not a Grammy winner.

In a 2026 JubileeCast interview, Habedank said he had reached 13 years of sobriety on May 25. He described taking it a day at a time, saying: “Every night before I sleep, I pray the same prayer: God, thank you for one more day of sobriety. Give me just one more day today.” This is his reported anniversary and daily practice, not an independently audited sobriety record.
