What Grace Kelly’s engagement ring looked like
The ring’s defining feature is its contrast of shapes: a broad, step-cut emerald-shaped center stone set between slim baguette-cut diamonds. Cartier heritage director Pierre Rainero described it as a platinum band with a 10.48-carat emerald-cut diamond framed by two baguettes, in an arrangement emblematic of Cartier. Only Natural Diamonds published his description.
The reported weight is 10.48 carats, a figure given both by British Vogue and by Rainero in the Cartier-related account. Some published accounts instead say 10.47 carats; the cited sources do not include a gemological certificate or explain the one-hundredth-carat difference. The available accounts also do not establish a color grade, clarity grade, diamond origin, or detailed setting measurements.
Who made the ring, and when?
The National Gallery of Victoria identifies the original engagement ring Rainier gave Kelly as made by Cartier Paris in 1956. The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza’s 2012 Cartier exhibition brochure also says Rainier ordered his fiancée’s engagement ring from Cartier.

It was Kelly’s second engagement ring
Before the large diamond ring, Rainier gave Kelly an eternity band set with alternating rubies and diamonds. Vogue connects the red-and-white stones with the colors of Monaco’s flag and says the band is widely reported to have been made by Cartier. That attribution is less firmly established than Cartier’s documented role in making the later diamond ring.
The ruby-and-diamond band and the emerald-cut diamond ring were two distinct pieces. The available accounts do not establish a specific ceremony at which one was formally replaced by the other.

Why the ring appears in High Society
Kelly wore the diamond ring in High Society, released in 1956 and directed by Charles Walters. The National Gallery of Victoria records that she wore the emerald-cut engagement ring in the film, which was her last before her marriage the following April.
Rainero, quoted by Only Natural Diamonds, said: “Unwilling to remove the ring, Grace Kelly wore it in her last film, High Society, giving it a full-fledged role.” The same account repeats a story that Rainier acquired the larger diamond after learning the production planned to give Kelly a fake one; it presents that motive as legend, not established fact.

What is not established about the original
The cited accounts do not establish who owns or holds the ring today, whether it is currently on public display, or a present-day valuation. Those details should not be inferred from its historical importance or from the reported carat weight.
