Accounts conflict: one biography describes lunches and a friend’s impression that Caroline was glad Carolyn made her brother laugh, while other recollections describe reservations or distance. The most accurate answer is that their private relationship remains uncertain.
How were Caroline Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette connected?
Caroline Kennedy was John F. Kennedy Jr.’s sister. Carolyn Bessette became John’s wife in 1996, making her Caroline’s sister-in-law. Caroline’s children were among the wedding party, according to a retrospective account of the ceremony. That establishes family participation, not the degree of affection or intimacy between the two women.
It also helps to keep two relationships distinct: John and Carolyn’s marriage, and Caroline and Carolyn’s relationship as sisters-in-law. Accounts describing John and Carolyn as close friends as well as spouses do not establish whether Caroline and Carolyn were close.
What do the accounts say about Caroline and Carolyn?
A more positive recollection
Grace Wehniainen’s February 2026 Bustle article, comparing biographical accounts and the television portrayal, says Elizabeth Beller’s biography describes Caroline and Carolyn going to lunch together. It also relays a friend’s impression that Caroline was happy her brother had found someone who made him laugh. These are reported recollections, not a public statement from Caroline.

Accounts suggesting reservations or distance
The same Bustle article recounts different claims from Sasha Chermayeff and Steve Gillon, as quoted in another 2024 oral biography: Caroline was initially unsupportive or did not think Carolyn was right for John. It also summarizes Edward Klein’s 2004 claim that Caroline and Carolyn were barely speaking after the wedding. These accounts come from different sources and should not be collapsed into a single, certain version of events.
What Carole Radziwill’s account can—and cannot—show
In a 2005 ABC News report about her memoir, Carole Radziwill recalled quickly bonding with Carolyn over feeling like outsiders in the Kennedy family. Radziwill also described her own relationship with Caroline as frosty. That is useful context about Radziwill’s experience, but it does not establish how Caroline and Carolyn saw one another.
Why the answer remains uncertain
The available accounts are retrospective and largely secondhand. Caroline has generally avoided public discussion of family matters, and the cited coverage does not provide a direct, attributable account from either Caroline or Carolyn defining their relationship. That absence cannot prove they were not close; it means the public evidence does not support a confident label such as “close friends” or “enemies.”
For the same reason, dramatized scenes should not be treated as proof of private conversations, motives, or feelings. The 2026 Bustle article explicitly compares the television portrayal with sparse and competing biographical accounts.

What the broader family history adds
John and Carolyn married privately in 1996. In 1999, John, Carolyn, and Carolyn’s sister Lauren died in a plane crash. The loss, and the family’s privacy, have shaped how friends and biographers have recalled the people involved.
RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, authors of an oral biography of John, told The Boston Globe in 2024 that they had interviewed more than 200 friends, confidants, and colleagues. Terenzio characterized John and Carolyn as close friends as well as spouses. The breadth of those interviews offers context about the couple, but it is not direct evidence of the sisters-in-law’s private relationship.
