Criterion Channel is the better-documented choice for viewers who want a carefully curated mix of classic and contemporary cinema, rotating Criterion Collection and Janus Films titles, and extensive video supplements. IndiePix Unlimited’s current site shows an active selection of independent, international, documentary, genre, and exclusive films, but its present price, territory coverage, device support, and total catalog size are not stated clearly enough to make a fair numerical comparison.
That means the practical choice depends on your priority. Choose Criterion Channel for transparent terms and a deep ecosystem of essays, interviews, commentaries, archival material, shorts, and themed programming. Consider IndiePix if its current catalog contains the specific independent or international films you want, but verify the live signup terms before paying.
Criterion Channel and IndiePix Unlimited at a glance
| Question | Criterion Channel | IndiePix Unlimited |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Independent streaming service for classic and contemporary films, including rotating Criterion and Janus selections, licensed titles, originals, shorts, and supplements. | Streaming service whose current site presents independent, international, documentary, genre, festival, and exclusive films. |
| Published current catalog figure | 3,000+ films currently streaming; more than 1,500 Criterion Collection and Janus Films library films; more than 500 shorts; 5,000 supplementary features. Figures are Criterion’s own, accessed in 2026. | Not stated on the current IndiePix Films page: indiepixfilms.com |
| Price | $10.99 USD monthly or $99.99 USD annually, according to the official support FAQ. | Not stated clearly on the current public page: indiepixfilms.com |
| Trial | Seven days; billing starts at the selected plan’s rate after the trial. | The current site advertises a seven-day free trial, but the complete billing terms are not exposed in the available page information. |
| Geography | Available only in the United States and Canada. | Current territory limits are not stated on the available public page. |
| Devices | Web browser plus listed Roku, Apple, Android/Amazon, Samsung television, and Xbox apps, subject to the minimum software versions in Criterion’s FAQ. | No current supported-device matrix is stated on the available public page. |
| Distinctive extras | More than 5,000 supplementary features, more than 500 shorts, and the continuous Criterion 24/7 stream. | Current supplementary-video inventory and a continuous channel are not stated. |
| Physical ownership | Criterion DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K releases are sold separately and do not unlock Channel access. | No physical-media relationship is established by the current service page. |
The figures are not a contestable “winner.” Criterion publishes service-wide numbers, while IndiePix does not publish a comparable current total. IndiePix’s historical launch announcement reported 400-plus films in January 2016, but that is not a current catalog count.
What Criterion Channel includes
Criterion describes its service as “an independent streaming service that features an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary films from Hollywood and around the world, many not available anywhere else.” The service combines several kinds of programming rather than functioning as a simple online shelf of Criterion-branded discs.
#1 Best Overall

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Rotating Criterion and Janus selections
Subscribers get access to a changing selection from The Criterion Collection and the Janus Films library, alongside films licensed from studios and independent distributors. The rotation is important: a film being associated with Criterion does not mean it will remain available indefinitely, and a title released on disc may not be streaming at the same time.
Published scale
Criterion’s support information, accessed in 2026, lists more than 3,000 films currently streaming. Within that figure it identifies more than 1,500 films from the Criterion Collection and Janus Films library. It also lists more than 500 shorts and 5,000 supplementary features. These are published service figures, not an independently audited inventory, and they can change as licenses and programming rotate.
Criterion 24/7
Criterion 24/7 is a continuous, thematically programmed stream for subscribers. You can join it while a film is in progress instead of selecting an individual title. It is useful when you want programmed discovery rather than a specific search result.
Why the supplements matter
The Channel includes interviews, video essays, commentaries, archival footage, and other contextual material in addition to feature films. For a viewer who studies film history, follows a director’s process, or wants background before or after a screening, those extras can be as valuable as the feature itself. The 5,000-feature figure covers the service’s published total, not a promise that every film has a full package of extras.

What IndiePix Unlimited currently shows
The current IndiePix Films site presents an active streaming catalog organized around groupings such as IndiePix Exclusives, Global Cinema, Festival Favorites, and genre collections. Surfaced titles include both narrative films and documentaries, with an emphasis on independent and international work.
What is established
- The site is operating as a streaming catalog rather than only a physical-film store.
- A seven-day free trial is advertised.
- The catalog presentation includes independent, international, documentary, genre, festival, and exclusive groupings.
What is not established on the current page
- A complete current subscription price or billing schedule.
- A definitive list of countries where direct signup is available.
- A supported-device chart or minimum software versions.
- A reliable current total for films, shorts, or supplementary features.
Those gaps do not prove that IndiePix lacks a feature; they mean the feature or term is not documented clearly enough in the available current page to use as a firm comparison. Check the live signup flow for your country and device before starting a paid subscription.

Historical context, not a current specification
In a January 2016 launch announcement, IndiePix said IndiePix Unlimited began with more than 400 films. That launch-era number should not be compared with Criterion’s current 3,000-plus figure. Catalogs change, and the two services may count films, shorts, collections, or availability windows differently.
The same announcement quoted Barnet Liberman, then CEO of IndiePix Films: “We’ve long made it our mission to push provocative, independent films into the US marketplace and introduce fans of world cinema to new, emerging voices and IndiePix Unlimited gives us a platform to do that in a meaningful way.” It is a statement about the service’s 2016 mission, not a current claim about its catalog or leadership.

Catalog character: curated film history versus independent discovery
Criterion’s center of gravity
Criterion is built for viewers who want a guided path through film history. Its scope reaches classic Hollywood, international cinema, contemporary work, shorts, and director- or theme-based programs. The Criterion and Janus libraries give the service a recognizable curatorial identity, while licensed and original programming broadens the selection beyond those labels.
The service’s value is not only the number of films. Collections, essays, commentaries, and archival material help answer “What should I watch next?” and “Why does this film matter?” That makes it especially suitable for film students, repertory-cinema fans, and viewers who enjoy spending time with one film and its context.
IndiePix’s center of gravity
IndiePix’s current presentation foregrounds independent and international discovery. Its categories make it easier to browse by global cinema, festival favorites, documentaries, genres, and exclusives. A viewer looking for films outside the largest studio pipelines may find the service’s emphasis more immediately relevant than a general-purpose streaming catalog.

Because IndiePix does not publish a comparable current total in the available information, you should judge it title by title. Search for several films, directors, countries, or documentary subjects you care about and confirm that those titles are playable in your territory before subscribing.
Why a film-count comparison would mislead
Criterion’s “3,000+ films currently streaming” and IndiePix’s “400+ films at launch” describe different dates and different scopes. One is a current service figure; the other is a 2016 launch report. Neither number tells you how many films in your preferred language, country, genre, or availability window you will actually be able to watch. A smaller, better-targeted catalog can be more useful than a larger one for a particular viewer.
Price, trial, and billing
Criterion Channel’s published plans
Criterion’s official Channel Support FAQ lists two plans: $10.99 USD per month or $99.99 USD per year. Both include a seven-day trial. The FAQ says billing begins at the selected plan’s rate after the trial, so note which plan you choose and the date the trial ends.
At the listed rates, paying monthly for twelve months would total $131.88 before taxes, while the annual plan costs $99.99. That is a difference of $31.89 over a year, assuming the published prices remain unchanged and you keep the subscription for the full twelve months. Prices and trial terms can change, so confirm the amount on the plan page when you subscribe: Criterion Channel, Select a Plan.
IndiePix’s visible trial, unresolved price
IndiePix’s current site advertises a seven-day free trial, but the available page information does not expose a complete current direct-subscription price, billing frequency, post-trial charge, or cancellation rule. Do not substitute the historical $5.99 launch-era price sometimes associated with older coverage; the available evidence does not establish it as a current rate.
Before entering payment details, confirm four items in the live IndiePix signup flow: the recurring amount, the billing interval, the exact time the trial converts, and how cancellation is handled. If you reach IndiePix through an Amazon channel listing, verify that channel’s terms separately because an add-on subscription can have different billing and cancellation controls.

Availability by country
Criterion Channel
Criterion states that the Channel is available only in the United States and Canada. A viewer elsewhere should not assume that a VPN, a physical Criterion disc, or a third-party channel creates official Channel access. The service’s own support information is the appropriate authority for current geographic availability.
IndiePix Unlimited
The current IndiePix page does not establish a complete territory list. The historical launch material emphasized bringing independent cinema into the U.S. marketplace, but that 2016 description cannot be treated as a current global availability policy. If you live outside the United States, check whether the signup page accepts your billing country and whether the films you want are licensed there.
Devices and watching at home
Criterion’s listed options
Criterion supports viewing in a web browser and lists apps or device support for Roku, Apple devices, Android and Amazon devices, Samsung televisions, and Xbox. The FAQ also specifies minimum software requirements, so an older television or streaming box may need an update even when its platform name appears on the list.
You do not need to buy a Roku or another streaming device to use the service: browser viewing is an official option. A compatible television, computer, tablet, or phone may already be enough.
IndiePix device verification
The available IndiePix page does not provide a current device matrix or minimum-version list. Check the exact playback options shown for your account before paying, especially if you expect to use a smart-TV app, game console, or television casting setup. A browser fallback may exist, but it should not be assumed without confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Streaming access is not disc ownership
Criterion Channel is separate from Criterion’s physical-media store. The Criterion general FAQ covers DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K releases sold through Criterion.com. Buying a disc gives you that edition and its included supplements; it does not unlock Channel streaming. Conversely, a Channel subscription does not give you permanent ownership of a film.

That distinction matters when a title disappears from the streaming rotation. If you want a particular film available without an internet connection, or you specifically want the supplements packaged with a certain disc edition, check the physical release separately. Verify the exact edition and current availability before buying because disc inventories and streaming rights are independent.
No equivalent physical-media relationship is established by the current IndiePix service page. Treat IndiePix Unlimited as a streaming decision unless a separate, current product page says otherwise.
Which service fits different viewers?
| Your priority | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic cinema and film history | Criterion Channel | Its published scope includes classic and contemporary films, Criterion and Janus selections, themed programming, shorts, and extensive supplements. |
| Independent or international discovery | Compare both, then sample IndiePix’s live catalog | IndiePix foregrounds global, independent, festival, documentary, and exclusive categories, while Criterion also offers international and independent work through its broader curation. |
| Documentaries | Inspect current title availability on both | IndiePix’s current page visibly includes documentary groupings, and Criterion includes documentaries and documentary-related supplements, but neither service guarantees every subject or country you want. |
| Video essays, commentaries, and archival context | Criterion Channel | Criterion publishes a total of 5,000 supplementary features and identifies interviews, essays, commentaries, and archival footage. |
| Transparent price and device information | Criterion Channel | The official FAQ states its price, trial, countries, and supported device families. |
| A specific IndiePix exclusive or festival title | IndiePix, if the title is playable in your territory | The current IndiePix catalog highlights exclusives and festival favorites; confirm the title’s live availability and billing terms first. |
| Permanent access to one favorite film | Physical edition, if available | A disc is a separate purchase and is not interchangeable with either streaming subscription. |
A practical way to test before committing
- Check your country first. Criterion officially limits the Channel to the United States and Canada. For IndiePix, look for a country selector or a billing-country check during the live signup process rather than relying on an old article or a third-party listing.
- Write down the recurring price. For Criterion, select monthly or annual and note the seven-day trial end date. For IndiePix, do not proceed until the post-trial amount and billing interval are visible.
- Search for representative titles. Test several films, directors, countries, and documentary subjects you actually watch. A broad category label is not proof that every title in that category is included.
- Test your intended device. Criterion’s browser option can serve as a fallback, but still check the required software version for a television, console, or streaming box. For IndiePix, confirm that your exact device or browser is supported.
- Read the trial conversion rule. Record when the trial ends, whether cancellation must occur before that date, and where cancellation is managed. A subscription purchased through an Amazon channel may use Amazon’s account controls rather than a direct IndiePix page.
- Check availability windows. Criterion’s catalog rotates, and a film’s presence today is not a permanent ownership right. Save or buy a physical edition separately if uninterrupted access matters.
- Recheck before renewal. Prices, catalogs, app support, and territory rules are volatile. Confirm the current details at renewal instead of relying on the terms you saw at signup.
Common misunderstandings
“Every Criterion Collection release is on the Channel.”
No. Criterion’s FAQ explicitly says that not all Criterion Collection releases are available to stream. The Channel and the physical catalog overlap, but neither is a complete substitute for the other.
“The Criterion Channel is the Criterion disc store.”
No. The Channel is a streaming subscription. Criterion’s DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K products are sold separately through Criterion.com and do not unlock streaming access.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“A 400-plus-film IndiePix figure proves the current catalog is smaller.”
No. That figure belongs to IndiePix’s January 2016 launch announcement. It is not a current total, and it cannot be compared directly with Criterion’s 2026-published service figures.
“A JustWatch listing proves I can subscribe.”
No. The JustWatch page shows dated IndiePix Unlimited Amazon Channel additions through July 2026. It is useful evidence that listings have appeared recently, but it does not guarantee current signup availability, price, territory coverage, or unchanged channel terms.
“A seven-day trial has the same rules everywhere.”
No. Criterion states that billing begins at the selected plan’s rate after its seven-day trial. IndiePix’s current page advertises a seven-day trial, but the available information does not establish the complete conversion and cancellation terms. Read the live checkout language for the account and country you will use.
Bottom line for the comparison
Criterion Channel is the safer recommendation when you value documented pricing, United States and Canada availability, broad device support, film-historical curation, and substantial supplements. IndiePix Unlimited may be the better discovery tool for a particular independent, international, documentary, festival, or exclusive title, but its current public information leaves enough unanswered that you should verify price, territory, devices, and trial conversion at signup. Neither service can be declared the larger catalog from the available figures, and neither subscription should be confused with owning a physical film.
