Rowling to Northumbria Police over comments Rowling made about her on social media. Willoughby called the comments a hate crime; the police later said the post did not meet the criminal threshold. That was the force’s stated assessment of the post, not a court judgment.
What happened
In an interview with Byline TV, Willoughby said she had contacted Northumbria Police about Rowling’s comments. Reuters reported on 7 March 2024 that the force confirmed receiving a complaint on Monday, 4 March, and said it was awaiting further contact with the complainant. Reuters reported the initial police statement.
Willoughby described the comments as a hate crime and said she believed they were an offence. Those were her allegations, not a police finding. The Independent reported that the post at issue included Rowling’s words: “India didn’t become a woman. India is cosplaying a misogynistic male fantasy of what a woman is.” The Independent’s report gives the attributed exchange.
What did Northumbria Police say?
The next day, Northumbria Police told the Press Association it had reviewed the post and found it did not meet the criminal threshold. The force said the complainant had been updated. The Independent reproduced the spokesperson’s statement: “While we recognise the upset this may have caused, the post was reviewed and did not meet the criminal threshold.” The Independent reported the police assessment on 8 March 2024.

How did Rowling respond?
Rowling rejected Willoughby’s allegation and referred to the Forstater ruling. The Independent summarized that ruling as establishing that gender-critical views can qualify as a protected philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010. It was context for Rowling’s response, not a ruling on this complaint and not a substitute for the police’s assessment. The Independent reported Rowling’s response.
