Before you go live, confirm your channel is eligible and that you have the necessary rights to stream the game footage and audio. A loop is not automatically eligible for monetization.
Before you start: check eligibility and rights
Confirm your channel can livestream
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before preparing a long broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Get permission for the footage and audio
Use only game footage and audio you have the necessary rights to stream. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the rights needed to use live content on Google services. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content; a match can prompt a warning, a placeholder, interruption, or termination. If you have a license, the rights holder may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Do not assume that old game footage is public domain, that buying a game grants streaming rights, or that looping footage qualifies as fair use. Those questions depend on the game, rights holder, intended use, and applicable law. When needed, ask the publisher or rights holder for permission covering the footage, audio, territory, and any commercial use.

Prepare the video and OBS scene
- Choose a video file. Use a local recording you have permission to stream. Keep the original file available on your computer. Choose an aspect ratio that suits the footage and how you want it presented on YouTube.
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Name the source if useful, then select the local video file. OBS documents Media Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux; its Media Sources guide explains the available controls.
- Enable Loop. In the Media Source properties, select Loop. OBS will restart the file when playback reaches the end. Preview the scene to confirm the picture and audio play as expected.
- Check the whole playback experience. Listen for unwanted silence, clipping, or abrupt audio changes at the loop point, and check that the image is framed as intended. Test before promoting the stream.
The available OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification for this workflow. Your computer still needs to run OBS and send the stream reliably; check performance during a private or unlisted test if you are unsure how your setup behaves.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and start the broadcast
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule a stream. Follow the current Studio prompts for the broadcast details.
- Connect OBS. Use OBS’s YouTube connection flow, or copy the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the URL-and-key workflow. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on stream or share it publicly.
- Start sending video from OBS. Start streaming in OBS. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and stream status. Then start or confirm the YouTube broadcast as prompted by the current Studio flow.
- Monitor the result. Confirm the video is looping, the audio is present, and the broadcast is live from a viewer’s perspective. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive guidance is not a promise of an uninterrupted, indefinite livestream. For longer sessions, plan to monitor the stream and check current account and platform limits.
Monetization: a loop does not guarantee revenue
YouTube says monetization of video game content depends on commercial-use rights granted by the game publisher. Its guidance cautions that simply showing gameplay—or using software for extended periods—may not be accepted for monetization without appropriate rights and sufficiently related instructional or educational commentary. A repetitive loop is therefore not guaranteed to qualify for ads or watch-hour credit. See YouTube’s guidance on video game and software content.

YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features, subject to eligibility. In India, creators must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Programme, and individual features have their own requirements. Check your account in Studio for current availability; eligibility for one feature does not mean every feature is enabled. Troubleshoot common problems
- The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled for the correct source.
- YouTube receives no video: Check that OBS is streaming to the intended YouTube broadcast and that the server URL and stream key were copied correctly. If you exposed the key, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- The Studio preview appears, but the broadcast is not live: Check the Live Control Room and complete the current prompt to start or confirm the broadcast.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the notice in Studio, check your rights, and contact the rights holder if you have a license that may require a Content ID allowlist.
- You cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions within the prior 90 days, and the minimum age requirement in YouTube Studio.
- The stream is longer than expected: Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive note for streams under 12 hours as evidence that an indefinite broadcast will remain uninterrupted. Monitor long sessions and confirm current YouTube limits.
