Pyre follows Padam and Tulsi, an elderly couple in a remote Himalayan village where migration has left fewer people around them. Their fear is stark: if they die there, will anyone remain to help or carry out their last rites? A letter from their estranged son, who has been absent for more than 30 years, brings a fragile possibility of reunion. But the film’s heart is not only abandonment; it is the companionship the couple have built across a lifetime.
What is Pyre about?
Vinod Kapri’s 2024 Indian feature centres on Padam and Tulsi, an ageing couple living in a Himalayan village depleted as families move to cities. Their days include bickering and familiar routines, small distractions from the isolation around them. Their deepest worry concerns what will happen when they die: with so few people left nearby, they fear there may be nobody to help or perform their last rites.
Then a letter arrives from their son, from whom they have not heard in over 30 years. Festival synopses describe the news as renewing the couple’s hope and changing their lives. The letter opens a question rather than resolving it: whether a promise of return can bridge decades of separation. IFFK’s synopsis and the São Paulo International Film Festival listing both frame the story around this combination of isolation, last rites and the son’s unexpected contact.
Why the film is also a love story
The village’s decline gives the couple’s private worries a structural context: migration has thinned the community that once might have surrounded them. Yet Pyre is not simply a story of parents left behind. Their bickering and shared routines suggest a relationship still in motion, shaped by years of living together, while the letter brings their bond with their children back into view.

Setting, language and the story’s reported origin
Festival listings place the story in a remote, high Himalayan village and identify the film’s language as Hindi with Kumaoni dialect. The landscape is not just a backdrop: the dwindling population makes the couple’s concern about care, death and community tangible. The Indian Express reported that the film’s origin lay in Kapri’s encounter with an elderly couple in Munsyari. That is production background, not evidence that Pyre is a documentary or a direct reconstruction of those people’s lives.
Who made Pyre?
The São Paulo International Film Festival credits Vinod Kapri as director and screenwriter, Manas Bhattacharya as cinematographer, Patricia Rommel and Subhajit Singha as editors, and Mychael Danna and Amritha Vaz as music composers. Its cast listing names Padam Singh and Hira Devi; other listings render the names as Padam Singh Kapri and Heera Devi, spelling variants rather than evidence of different performers. The São Paulo listing gives a runtime of 106 minutes, while WOW Film Festival lists 110 minutes and the London Indian Film Festival lists 111. Because the festival catalogues disagree, the runtime is best treated as listing-specific.

IFFK, São Paulo and London Indian Film Festival identify Pyre as the winner of the PÖFF Best Film Audience Award at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. India Today reported in 2026 that the film had received 18 international awards, including 15 Best Film awards; that total is a reported figure, not a complete independently verified award inventory.
