Its public announcements document some suspensions, but the available record does not establish whether enforcement was consistent across all performers—or prove that it was selective.
What is WWE’s Wellness Policy?
WWE describes the Talent Wellness Program as a combination of medical screening and a substance-abuse and drug-testing policy. Its FAQ says the health program includes cardiovascular evaluations, annual physicals, blood screening, medical referrals, and ImPACT testing, which assesses brain function.
WWE says Aegis Sciences Corporation designed the substance-abuse and drug-testing policy and administers it independently of WWE. The FAQ identifies Dr. Joseph Maroon as medical director and Dr. David L. Black of Aegis as administrator of the drug-testing policy. Those are WWE’s descriptions of the program’s design and administration; they are not an independent audit of its operation.
What happens after a wellness violation?
WWE’s FAQ sets out a three-strike schedule for positive tests under its drug-testing policy. These are the published policy terms, not independently measured enforcement outcomes.

| Violation | Penalty stated in WWE’s FAQ |
|---|---|
| First positive test | 30-day unpaid suspension |
| Second positive test | 60-day unpaid suspension |
| Third positive test | Termination |
The same FAQ says a positive test leads to follow-up testing at least 12 times over one year. It also specifies a $2,500 fine for each positive marijuana test, describes a prescription review process, and says certain strikes remain on a performer’s record if they leave and later return. The FAQ does not, in the material cited here, define every circumstance in which a strike remains on record.
How often does WWE test wrestlers?
WWE’s FAQ says talent are randomly tested a minimum of four times per year. That figure describes the company’s stated policy, not a public count of tests actually administered. The policy description distinguishes this random testing from follow-up testing after a positive result and from the program’s separate health screenings.

What do the announced suspensions show?
The program’s history and public enforcement announcements provide examples, but not a complete case record.
- WWE’s archived Drug Policy Update said the company was developing drug and steroid testing alongside heightened cardiovascular monitoring, with implementation expected before the end of the first quarter of 2006. A federal court filing later recounted that WWE instituted the program in February 2006, initially involving drug and cardiovascular testing: Case 3:15-cv-01074-JAM, Document 374, filed March 28, 2018.
- On August 30, 2007, WWE said it had issued suspension notices to ten performers based on independent information received from investigators in the Albany County, New York, District Attorney’s office. WWE also said it would begin making the names of performers suspended under the policy public on November 1. The announcement documents that response and a change in disclosure practice; it does not describe every case or establish the full enforcement record. WWE’s statement
- WWE announced a 30-day suspension for developmental performer Afa Anoai for a first policy violation. WWE’s announcement
- On May 20, 2008, WWE announced a 60-day suspension for William Regal, whose legal name is Darren Matthews, for a second violation. WWE’s announcement
The Anoai and Regal announcements match the first- and second-violation penalties in WWE’s published schedule. Two announced cases, however, cannot show whether all performers with comparable findings received the same treatment.

Does the public record prove WWE enforced the policy inconsistently?
No. The published rules and selected suspension announcements make it reasonable to ask how the policy was applied, but the sources cited here do not provide a complete, case-by-case dataset or a current independent audit. They do not show every test, finding, exception, or internal decision. Missing public information is not proof of favoritism, selective testing, or a cover-up.
Other WWE statements should also be read with their source in mind. The company’s “Setting The Record Straight” page makes claims about the program’s scope, independence, and funding. It is WWE’s account, not independent corroboration.

A federal court filing also records a litigant’s statement that he did not receive medical treatment from WWE or the Talent Wellness Program for head injuries. That is a claim made in litigation, not a court finding, and it does not establish what care every performer received.
