In the Heart of the Sea is Nathaniel Philbrick’s nonfiction history of the 1820 wreck of the Nantucket whaleship Essex and its crew’s struggle to survive at sea. The story also has a lasting literary connection: the National Endowment for the Arts links the disaster to events that inspired Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.

What is In the Heart of the Sea about?

Philbrick’s book recounts the loss of the Essex, a Nantucket whaling ship that was rammed by a sperm whale and sank in 1820. Penguin Random House’s description says the crew then drifted for more than ninety days in three small boats. That duration is the publisher’s summary; it should not be mistaken for an independently verified figure here.

The central subject is both a maritime disaster and the ordeal that followed it. Philbrick presents a modern historical account of the event, rather than a firsthand survivor narrative. The book is listed by the National Book Foundation as the winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.

Penguin Random House’s book listing identifies the work as In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The National Book Foundation award listing provides its award recognition.

How does the Essex disaster relate to Moby-Dick?

The Essex disaster is part of the historical background associated with Melville’s Moby-Dick. The National Endowment for the Arts connects the real event to the novel’s inspiration. That is a historical and literary connection, not a claim that Melville’s novel directly retells the shipwreck or reproduces Philbrick’s account. The NEA’s reader resource for In the Heart of the Sea offers context for that connection.

Philbrick’s history and the survivors’ own accounts

For a modern historical synthesis, Philbrick’s book is the relevant choice. Readers seeking testimony closer to the event can turn to The Loss of the Ship Essex, Sunk by a Whale, a collection that Penguin Random House describes as including firsthand narratives by Thomas Nickerson, Owen Chase, and others. The two books serve different purposes: one is a later history, the other brings together survivor accounts.

See the publisher’s listing for The Loss of the Ship Essex, Sunk by a Whale for details about that companion volume.

The film adaptation

Penguin Random House describes Philbrick’s book as adapted for the screen. The adaptation is associated with Ron Howard’s 2015 film, but cinematic storytelling should be treated as an interpretation, not as evidence for historical details. The available coverage does not establish a basis here for a scene-by-scene comparison.
