In Martin Scorsese’s *Silence*, Christianity in 17th-Century Japan Gets the Buddhist Treatment

Scorsese’s Silence adapts Shūsaku Endō’s ambiguous novel against the history of Christian suppression in Japan. Its Buddhist lens is an interpretation, not an explanation of persecution as doctrine.

Martin Scorsese’s Silence (2016) places Christian faith in a Japan shaped by Tokugawa rule, religious diversity and the suppression of Christianity. Calling it “the Buddhist treatment” is best understood as an interpretive lens—not the film’s declared religious identity, and not evidence that persecution represented Buddhist teaching. The story is historical fiction adapted from Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 novel, and its tensions become clearer when the film is compared both with the book and with the history behind it.

What “the Buddhist treatment” means—and what it does not

The phrase points to a way of reading Silence: instead of treating Christian faith as an unquestioned center and Japan as merely its backdrop, the film asks what happens when Christian belief encounters a different religious and political world. That reading can illuminate the story’s conflicts, but it should not collapse distinct things into one explanation.

  • State policy: Tokugawa authorities suppressed Christianity and pursued suspected Christians.
  • Buddhist institutions and ideas: These are not interchangeable with the government or its enforcement of policy.
  • Individual characters: Their choices, doubts and actions belong to the drama; they do not automatically represent a whole religion.

A 2023 article in the Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences, “Parallax between Buddhism and Christianity: The silence in ‘Silence’,” offers one scholarly interpretation. Its authors contrast Christian creator-God theology with Buddhist ideas and criticize violence carried out in the name of religious and political authority. That is an argument about the film, not a neutral account of all Japanese Buddhism or proof that persecution followed Buddhist doctrine.

The historical setting behind the story

Jesuits arrived in Japan with Francis Xavier in 1549, and Christian communities developed over the following decades. The Society of Jesus says missionaries were officially expelled by the 1620s; some priests remained underground to minister to Christians. The film’s setting reflects the resulting danger for both missionaries and Japanese believers.

The Society of Jesus account estimates that 300,000 to 500,000 Japanese people were baptized as Christians, attributing that estimate to Jesuit historian Fr. M. Antoni J. Ucerler, SJ. It is an estimate, not a census or an independently verified count. Ucerler also describes Ferreira, a historical Portuguese Jesuit and mission superior, as the first to renounce his faith under torture. He says: “He was the great missionary, the superior of all Jesuit missionaries, and the first to renounce his faith under torture.”

The Education for Justice discussion guide places the story against the 1614 Edict of Expulsion and subsequent suppression. It also describes the fumi-e: an image suspected Christians were ordered to trample or spit upon as a test of faith. The guide is useful for the film’s synopsis and themes; it is not, by itself, a primary historical source.

Film and novel: two versions of an unsettled encounter

Scorsese’s film adapts Endō’s 1966 novel; it is not a documentary reconstruction. The protagonists’ search for their missing mentor, the missionary Ferreira, belongs to a fictional narrative shaped by real people, events and historical conditions. The distinction matters: the film can dramatize the pressure of the period without every scene or character being treated as a factual record.

Endō’s novel also gives room to criticism of Christianity as an invasive faith. As Nippon.com notes, the book is often ambiguous. That ambiguity helps explain why the story is more complicated than a triumphalist account of missionaries bringing truth to a hostile population: it asks what the encounter means to Japanese Christians and to the society in which they live.

Scorsese has spoken about approaching that cultural difference with respect. In a 2016 interview with James Martin, S.J., for America Magazine, he said: “I think we have to respect that culture, though.” The remark offers context for the filmmaker’s approach, but it does not settle how viewers should interpret the film’s religious contrasts.

How to read the film without conflating religion and power

A careful viewing keeps three comparisons in view. First, notice where the film’s choices may differ from Endō’s novel; adaptation is interpretation, not simple transcription. Second, distinguish historical context—such as the expulsion of missionaries and persecution—from dramatic inventions used to tell a story. Third, separate depictions of Buddhist political authority from claims about Buddhist teaching. The last distinction is essential when considering the 2023 scholarly comparison: it can open a useful conversation without standing in for every Buddhist tradition or explaining the whole history of persecution.

Read this way, Silence is not simply a film about Christianity being judged by Buddhism. It is a drama about faith and cultural encounter under coercive power, with a novelistic ambiguity that resists easy conclusions about who understands whom.
