Why The Sting is the best first watch
The Sting brings Redford’s screen presence together with Newman’s in an accessible caper. It also won Best Picture at the 46th Academy Awards, which honored films released in 1973. The Academy’s record lists wins for the film in several other categories, including directing for George Roy Hill, film editing, art direction, costume design, music scoring or adaptation, and writing.

Redford was nominated for his performance in The Sting, but he did not win the acting award. The distinction matters: the film’s Best Picture win is strong recognition, but it is not an acting victory for Redford.
Where can you stream The Sting?
Streaming rights change and vary by country, so check a live streaming availability guide for your region before settling in. The Associated Press reported on September 16, 2025, that The Sting was streaming on Spectrum at that time. That is a dated listing, not confirmation that the film is available there now.

When Ordinary People is the better Redford choice
If you want to honor Redford as a filmmaker rather than focus on his acting, choose Ordinary People (1980), a serious family drama. At the 1981 Academy Awards, Redford won Best Director for the film, which also won Best Picture. The choice comes down to what you want from the evening: the caper and star pairing of The Sting, or Redford’s award-winning work behind the camera on Ordinary People.
