In a Violent Nature almost made me physically ill, and I loved it. That contradiction is the point of watching this 2024 slasher: its patient camera keeps close to the killer as he walks through the woods, while its graphic violence makes those quiet stretches feel like a countdown.
A slasher that follows the killer
Directed by Chris Nash, In a Violent Nature runs 94 minutes and is in English. Its central formal choice is to follow Johnny, a masked killer moving through a secluded forest, rather than organize the story chiefly around the people he hunts. Shudder’s official listing identifies the film and provides its watch page; availability can vary by region and change over time.

That camera allegiance changes what a slasher’s familiar ingredients feel like. The film stays with Johnny through stretches of walking and relative quiet. Instead of cutting constantly among endangered characters, it lets the journey itself occupy the screen. The suspense comes partly from waiting: the question is not only who might be attacked, but when the quiet will give way to violence.
Why the violence is hard to watch
When attacks arrive, the effects are prominent rather than tucked out of sight. Production interviews describe practical effects as a defining part of the gore, while cinematography reporting also notes visual-effects work for selected finishing tasks. It is more accurate to say the film relies substantially on practical effects than to claim every effect is practical. Production interview · Cinematography interview
#1 Best Overall
The combination of an unhurried approach and explicit kills creates a particular kind of intensity. Critics have called the violence graphic and methodical and the presentation unusually unsettling; those are critical descriptions, not a prediction of how every viewer will respond. If sustained, graphic violence is difficult for you, expect this to be an intense watch rather than a conventional, quickly cut slasher.

The film’s patience can make the violent moments feel less like brief shocks and more like the destination of a long, uneasy approach. Staying with Johnny also removes some of the usual emotional framing that comes from centering victims’ reactions. That does not make the film detached: it puts the viewer beside the killer’s movements, then asks them to sit with what follows.

- In a Violent Nature
For me, that was both physically difficult and compelling. The queasiness was not proof that the film works for everyone, and discomfort alone is not a measure of artistic success. What made the experience worthwhile was how clearly the formal choice—killer-centered camera, extended movement, explicit practical gore—shaped the tension rather than serving as decoration.

Who may want to watch it
- Consider it if you are curious about slashers that change point of view and use pacing, silence, and movement to build anticipation.
- Approach cautiously if prolonged graphic violence tends to make horror unpleasant for you. The film’s presentation is intense; this is a viewing expectation, not a medical assessment.
- Do not expect a victim-centered chase story or rapid action throughout. Much of the experience is the killer’s passage through the woods and the suspense around what happens next.
