An IMDb episode-ratings graph can help you spot a strong run, a rough patch, or a late-series dip—but it cannot tell you by itself whether a TV show is worth watching. IMDb’s series rating and its episode ratings are separate measures, and the site does not disclose the exact formula behind its displayed ratings. Use the graph as a screening tool, then weigh vote support, season context, and your own taste before deciding to binge or skip.
What an IMDb ratings graph can—and cannot—tell you
An episode graph plots the user ratings for individual episodes, making it easier to notice patterns than by scanning scores one at a time. A broadly steady line suggests consistency in how voters rated episodes; a cluster of lower scores may flag a season or stretch worth investigating; isolated highs and lows point to individual outliers.
Describe what the graph shows, not what it proves. “Ratings trend downward” is a defensible observation. “The show objectively gets worse” is not: IMDb ratings are user opinions, and opinions about quality are subjective. A low-rated episode can still work for viewers who like its subject, tone, or pacing.
Why the series rating is not the episode graph’s average
IMDb displays a weighted average for a title, but it does not publish the exact calculation. IMDb Help says, “To ensure that our rating mechanism remains effective, we do not disclose the exact method used to generate the rating.” The displayed figure therefore should not be treated as a transparent arithmetic mean.

A series rating and episode ratings are separate: users can rate a series and its episodes independently. The series score is not the weighted average of the episode scores. Use the series rating as one signal about the show overall, and the episode graph to examine how individual installments were rated.
How to judge an episode graph before committing
- Look for a pattern across episodes. Decide whether scores are broadly stable, improve, decline, or are shaped by a few unusually high- or low-rated episodes. Do not let one outlier stand in for an entire series.
- Check vote support. An episode score with sparse participation deserves less confidence than one supported by many votes. A score alone does not show how much participation supports it; check the episode’s vote count where available. The evidence here does not establish vote counts for any particular show.
- Compare seasons, not just endpoints. A weak opening episode or a celebrated finale can distort an impression of the show’s middle. Look for clusters and changes within seasons before deciding there is a sustained trend.
- Account for your preferences. Ratings do not encode whether you enjoy a documentary’s subject, a slow build, a particular tone, or a difficult stretch. A dip may matter greatly to one viewer and little to another.
- Use the graph to decide what to sample. If a season has a lower-rated cluster, consider trying the first episode or a representative installment before committing to a full binge. The graph can guide that choice, but it cannot guarantee your response.
Why ratings can shift over time
IMDb says ratings may change as a title reaches a wider audience. Early voters are often more interested in a title and more likely to rate it favorably; later voters may include more casual viewers with different expectations. That means an apparent decline can reflect changing voters as well as changing reactions to episodes.

This matters especially when comparing a new series with an established one. A line that slopes down is evidence of a change in user scores, not by itself proof of declining creative quality. IMDb’s explanation is available on its ratings-change help page.
What IMDb’s charts and downloadable data add
IMDb’s Top 250 TV chart ranks series, not individual episodes, and IMDb says only votes from regular voters count toward its Top 250 charts. The chart can offer series-level context, but it cannot replace an episode graph or establish which season is strongest.

IMDb makes non-commercial datasets available as gzipped TSV files, refreshes them daily, and includes episode-number fields in the episode data. IMDb describes this public subset as intended for personal and non-commercial use under its terms; check the current terms before republishing or using the data commercially. IMDb also offers licensed ratings and metadata products, which are distinct from the non-commercial datasets. See the IMDb Non-Commercial Datasets documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can this graph tell you which shows to binge or skip?
Not without examining a specific show’s episode scores, vote counts, seasons, and current viewing availability. No particular series, show-level vote data, or regional streaming availability is established here, so naming binge or skip recommendations would overstate what the evidence supports.
