IO Interactive’s game once known as Project 007 is now officially titled 007 First Light. It is a single-player, third-person action-adventure that tells an original story about James Bond at 26, before he becomes a seasoned 00 agent. Official materials describe a mix of stealth, action, gadgets and player choice—not an adaptation of a particular Bond film.
What is 007 First Light?
IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios announced the title 007 First Light on June 4, 2025. The project was first announced under the working name Project 007. IO describes the finished game as a standalone, story-driven action-adventure with a reimagined origin story for a young James Bond. IO Interactive’s announcement
The story begins with Bond at 26, serving as a Royal Navy air crewman. After his instincts and combat ability draw attention, he is recruited into MI6 and enters training for its elite 00 section. This is a new interpretation of Bond’s beginnings, not a retelling of one specific film or earlier story. The PlayStation product page describes it as a standalone story not directly based on previous James Bond media.
How does the gameplay work?
The game is played from a third-person perspective and combines stealth with action. IO Interactive’s description gives players several ways to handle obstacles: use brute force, rely on cunning, or lean on Bond’s charm. Gadgets, driving and player choice are part of the mix. In its September 2025 gameplay showcase, IO presented a covert operation at a chess tournament in Slovakia and an infiltration at a London gala. Who appears in the story?
The reveal named familiar Bond figures M, Q and Moneypenny, alongside Greenway, a new mentor character. The story’s early-career setting gives the game room to show Bond learning the trade rather than beginning as the fully established agent seen in many other Bond stories. PlayStation Blog

Is 007 First Light multiplayer?
No multiplayer mode has been announced. PlayStation lists 007 First Light as a single-player game and says there is no information about multiplayer modes. PlayStation’s product page
When does it release, and what platforms are announced?
As of October 8, 2026, the PlayStation US product page lists May 27, 2026 as the PS5 release date; IO Interactive’s 2026 technical post also gives May 27. An earlier PlayStation Blog headline named March 27, 2026, but that date has been superseded by the later official listings. What makes this a different kind of Bond game?
007 First Light puts the origin itself at the center: a young Bond is recruited and trained, and the player sees him develop into a 00 agent. IO Interactive is also bringing its stealth-and-action approach to the franchise, with the advertised option to use force, guile or charm. The official description therefore points to a story-led adventure in which how Bond gets through a situation matters alongside the mission outcome.
For viewers familiar with Bond mainly through film, the key distinction is that this is an original game story rather than a movie tie-in. It features recognizable characters and the franchise’s espionage world, but the official materials frame it as a standalone reimagining.
