IMDb at 25: How a Fan-Made Film Database Became an Internet Institution

The 25th anniversary in the title refers to IMDb’s launch on October 17, 1990, not to Amazon’s ownership. IMDb marked that service anniversary on October 17, 2015. The company later marked 25 years as an Amazon-owned business in 2023, and the service reached its 35th anniversary in October 2025.

What began as Col Needham’s personal record of films became a volunteer-built internet database, a global entertainment reference and, eventually, an Amazon-owned media-information business.

Which IMDb anniversary does “25 years” mean?

IMDb’s own history identifies 1990 as its launch year, while founder Col Needham dates the first online publication of the database software to October 17, 1990. That makes October 17, 2015 the 25th anniversary described by the historical title. IMDb’s official 2015 announcement said the site was turning 25 on that date (IMDb’s 2015 release).

A separate anniversary is easy to confuse with it: Amazon acquired IMDb in 1998, so April 2023 marked 25 years of the Amazon relationship. Needham described that anniversary as April 24, 2023 (Needham’s 2023 post). Amazon has also published April 27, 1998 as the acquisition date, so the exact day should be attributed rather than treated as settled. The underlying acquisition is not in dispute.

IMDb is no longer 25. A 2025 letter from Needham records the service’s 35th anniversary (IMDb’s 35th-anniversary letter).

Before IMDb: a paper diary and a home computer

Needham was a British film enthusiast and programmer who began recording the movies he watched in a paper diary. As the list grew, he transferred it to a home computer and created a database containing titles and major credits. It was a personal organizing project, not a conventional media startup.

That origin explains something important about IMDb’s later identity: its first problem was practical and human—how to remember films, performers and credits—not how to sell advertising or run a studio. Needham’s account of the project and its development appears in Amazon’s interview with him.

The Usenet years: IMDb before the modern web

In the late 1980s, Needham joined an internet film-discussion community. Participants exchanged and pooled entertainment information, and Needham wrote software to organize it. He published the first version of the IMDb database on October 17, 1990.

This was an internet service before most people experienced the web as a collection of commercial sites. IMDb grew through discussion groups, shared files and scripts, then migrated into the browser-based form audiences now recognize. A contemporary account of that early-internet setting is available from TIME.

How a volunteer project became a company

IMDb’s breadth came from participation. Volunteers added and corrected records, turning Needham’s personal database into a continually expanding community project. That model made it possible to cover far more films, television programs and credits than a small editorial staff could have entered alone.

The transition to a business happened gradually:

  • IMDb’s contributors expanded the database and kept it current.
  • The creators incorporated the company in 1996.
  • The business reportedly took no outside investment.
  • Its first web server was bought with a credit card.
  • Advertising revenue helped pay for operations.

Those details, supplied by Needham in an Amazon interview, contrast sharply with IMDb’s present image as a large Amazon-owned information platform (Amazon’s early-development profile).

Why Amazon acquired IMDb

Amazon began advertising on IMDb in 1997. Needham was then contacted by Amazon’s general counsel after Jeff Bezos and Amazon had discussed film websites. Amazon acquired IMDb in 1998, and Needham stayed with the company.

Bezos viewed the database as useful to Amazon’s longer-term plans for online video sales. The deal therefore connected a trusted entertainment-information service with an online retailer developing ambitions in digital video. Amazon describes IMDb as one of its early acquisitions in its interview with Needham. The company’s separate account of IMDb’s history uses the April 27 date for the transaction (Amazon’s “Behind the scenes at IMDb”).

What IMDb became

Calling IMDb a movie-credit database is now incomplete. Its current help pages describe a much broader service (IMDb’s history and general-information page):

  • Reference data: film and television titles, cast and crew credits, biographies, awards, technical details, trivia, quotes, goofs and box-office information.
  • Audience tools: user ratings and reviews, watchlists, recommendations, trailers, video and entertainment news.
  • Viewing decisions: showtimes and ticketing information where available.
  • Professional services: IMDbPro profiles, industry contacts, project and company research, and professional activity indicators.

These categories do not all have the same status. A factual credit record, an editorial article, a user review and a numerical user rating are different kinds of information. IMDb’s scale comes from combining them, but the combination should not be mistaken for a single editorial voice.

The 2015 25th-anniversary celebration

For the launch anniversary, IMDb announced the Top 25 Stars of All Time, new Top Rated TV Shows and Most Popular TV Shows charts, and a reported audience of more than 250 million monthly unique visitors worldwide at the time (official announcement).

The star list was based on IMDb page views. Johnny Depp ranked first, followed by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. “Top” therefore meant most viewed on IMDb under that announcement’s method—not best actor, most acclaimed performer, highest-grossing star or most historically influential figure.

Page-view charts measure attention. A new release, awards campaign, controversy or heavily searched story can change them quickly. The 2015 list is best understood as a snapshot of what IMDb’s audience was looking at, not a permanent cultural verdict.

Why IMDb became an internet institution

IMDb became a routine reference point for identifying performers, checking credits, confirming release information and discovering what to watch next. Search engines and entertainment coverage made its pages part of the ordinary path from a question about a film to a title, actor or production fact.

Its user ratings also helped create a public, data-driven film canon alongside professional criticism. That does not make the ratings objective: they reflect the behavior and preferences of IMDb users, and a rating is not the same thing as a review. IMDb’s influence comes from the combination of enormous factual coverage, public participation and tools that turn information into discovery.

The database is not infallible. A continuously changing contributor system can produce disputed credits, duplicate records, omissions, outdated details or category-specific inconsistencies. IMDb’s authority is therefore practical and expansive rather than a guarantee that every field has been independently verified.

“The world’s biggest” needs a definition

The phrase in the historical title is period promotional or journalistic language, not a single technical ranking. “Biggest” could mean the number of records, website traffic, international reach, professional usefulness or cultural influence. IMDb’s current help material calls it the “world’s most popular and authoritative source” for movie, television and celebrity content, while the 2015 release used “#1 movie website in the world” language (IMDb help; 2015 release). Those are company descriptions, not a universally defined comparison.

Audience figures also require dates and metrics. IMDb reported more than 250 million monthly unique visitors in 2015. An Amazon profile in 2023 cited more than 200 million monthly visitors. Different wording and measurement methods mean those figures should not be read as a clean growth or decline series.

After 25: Amazon integration and IMDb today

Amazon ownership did not turn IMDb into a streaming service alone. It remained a broad information and discovery platform while expanding its television, streaming, video, news and professional functions. IMDbPro is the paid extension for people working in entertainment: actors, filmmakers, producers, casting professionals, agents, managers, researchers and companies.

As of July 2026, IMDb says Amazon’s account system is used for IMDb sign-in and new account creation, with migration prompts for some users (IMDb’s account-help page). That is a current account change, not part of the 2015 anniversary story.

Who IMDbPro is for

IMDbPro supports professional page management, photos and reels, casting visibility, contact and company research, project tracking, STARmeter and MOVIEmeter information, and industry networking. Official pricing information lists an individual plan at $19.99 per month or $149.99 per year, a group plan at $79.99 per month for up to five members, a free Basic option for people with verified IMDb credits, and custom business pricing for teams of 20 or more; taxes and VAT may apply (IMDbPro pricing help).

Those features are not necessary for ordinary viewers who want cast lists, ratings, trivia, recommendations or watchlists. IMDbPro can help professionals research and manage their presence, but it does not guarantee work, representation, auditions or better rankings. The official product page is IMDbPro.

The lasting transformation

IMDb’s achievement was not simply surviving for 25 years. It turned one film fan’s private filing problem into a shared global reference system. The 2015 anniversary marked the moment that transformation had become unmistakable; its 2025 anniversary shows that the underlying service continues to evolve.
