Reports in August 2025 said Apple might use an early exit option, potentially leaving NBCUniversal and Peacock to pick up its Friday-night games. MLB’s finalized 2026–2028 agreements did something different: Apple kept Friday Night Baseball, while NBCUniversal acquired Sunday Night Baseball, Sunday Leadoff and Wild Card inventory. Apple was still carrying its Friday doubleheaders in 2026.
What the August 2025 report actually said
On August 19–20, 2025, several outlets reported that Apple could leave its MLB relationship before the originally expected end of the agreement. The reports described a developing rights negotiation, not a completed transfer of games. Some accounts said NBC or Peacock might assume the Friday package; other reporting connected NBC with Sunday and postseason rights, ESPN with additional streaming or out-of-market products, and Netflix with selected events.
The precise contractual mechanism was not publicly established. One industry account described an early opt-out in an agreement reportedly designed to run into the latter part of the decade, while another suggested the opportunity may have applied at an earlier point. The available reporting does not justify saying that Apple definitely exercised an opt-out.
That distinction matters: a report about a possible decision is not the same as MLB announcing a replacement rights deal.

The official outcome: Apple stayed
MLB’s November 19, 2025 announcement of new three-year media agreements explicitly kept Apple’s Friday-night doubleheaders for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 seasons. The same announcement awarded NBCUniversal a different group of games and events. This official release is stronger evidence than the earlier negotiation reports.
Apple then announced that Friday Night Baseball would return for a fifth season on March 27, 2026. Apple’s later 2026 schedule announcements continued to describe a weekly Friday doubleheader, and MLB separately confirmed that its partnership with Apple continued for the 2026 season.
In other words, the broad headline “Apple backed out of MLB” did not become the final result. The narrower statement—“Apple was reported to be considering an early exit”—was accurate as a description of the August 2025 news cycle.
What NBCUniversal actually acquired
NBCUniversal’s 2026–2028 partnership substantially expands NBC’s MLB presence, but it does not replace Apple’s Friday package.

| NBC package | Distribution | What viewers should know |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday Night Baseball | NBC and Peacock | A national Sunday package; individual games may be exclusive to a specified NBC outlet. |
| Sunday Leadoff | NBCUniversal outlets, including Peacock | A separate Sunday window, not a replacement for Friday Night Baseball. |
| Wild Card Series | NBC and Peacock | Postseason rights within the 2026–2028 agreement; availability depends on the particular game and outlet. |
| Daily out-of-market game stream | Peacock package | A selected daily stream is not the same as every MLB game. |
| July 5, 2026 special schedule | NBC and Peacock | NBCUniversal said all 15 games that day would be presented exclusively through its outlets. |
| Sunday afternoon whip-around program | NBCUniversal | A studio format connecting viewers to games around the league. |
NBC Sports’ official description outlines these elements. “NBC has MLB” therefore means a defined collection of windows and events, not the entire league schedule.
Where MLB games are available in 2026
The 2026 rights map is distributed among several companies. A viewer’s service depends on the day, event, market and whether a game is nationally exclusive.
| Package or event | Main rights holder | Typical outlet | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders | Apple | Apple’s streaming service | Selected Friday games; it is not a full-season replacement for MLB.TV. |
| Sunday Night Baseball | NBCUniversal | NBC and Peacock | Some games may be exclusive to Peacock rather than free over the air. |
| Sunday Leadoff | NBCUniversal | NBCUniversal outlets and Peacock | One scheduled window, not all Sunday games. |
| Wild Card Series | NBCUniversal | NBC and Peacock | Outlet and exclusivity can vary by game. |
| ESPN’s MLB package | ESPN | ESPN platforms | Exact access depends on the current ESPN plan and the game’s national status. |
| MLB at Field of Dreams and Home Run Derby | Netflix | Netflix | Event-specific live coverage, not weekly league coverage. |
| Other national windows | Fox, FS1, TBS/TNT-related services and existing partners | Linear and streaming outlets | Rights remain divided by package and agreement term. |
| Out-of-market and league-controlled products | MLB | MLB platforms, including MLB.TV | Local blackouts and nationally exclusive games still apply. |

The report appeared during a major reset in MLB’s national rights structure. ESPN and MLB had agreed to end their previous national agreement after the 2025 season, MLB was assembling several replacement packages, and NBCUniversal was seeking a larger role. Apple’s package was comparatively narrow—a Friday doubleheader rather than a league-wide service—so its value and long-term fit were natural subjects of speculation.
Associated Press reporting put Apple’s payment at approximately $85 million per season, a figure attributed to AP rather than disclosed by Apple or MLB in an official contract document. The same period included discussion of MLB’s desire for a more nationally accessible rights structure. Those business conditions explain why an exit story was credible; they do not prove that Apple left.

What Apple’s 2026 package means for fans
Friday Night Baseball debuted in 2022 and continued as a weekly doubleheader in 2026. Apple’s March announcement confirmed the March 27 start, while its June schedule release continued to list July Friday games. Apple and MLB’s announcements describe availability in 60 countries and regions, although territorial rights and restrictions can differ.
Apple’s 2025 schedule announcement listed a U.S. price of $9.99 per month at that time. That historical price should not be treated as a verified 2026 rate; readers should check Apple’s current pricing page before subscribing.

How to judge claims about the rights reshuffle
- Separate reporting from confirmation. The August 2025 stories described a possible Apple exit. They were not a final MLB rights announcement.
- Check the later primary document. MLB’s November 19, 2025 release retained Apple for 2026–2028 and assigned NBC different inventory.
- Check the actual schedule. Apple’s March, June and later 2026 announcements show that Friday Night Baseball continued.
- Identify the exact package. A service carrying Sunday, a Wild Card game or a special event is not carrying all MLB games.
Important viewing caveats
- Peacock’s MLB rights do not include every game, and “NBC” does not guarantee free over-the-air access for every listed event.
- MLB.TV is primarily an out-of-market product; local blackouts and national exclusives can remove games from its schedule.
- Apple’s MLB package is accessed through Apple’s streaming service, but it remains a selected Friday package rather than the entire league.
- International availability may differ from the U.S. rights map.
- A July 5 special event or postseason series can have different exclusivity rules from a normal weekly window.
What remains unresolved
The exact language of Apple’s original contract and any early-exit provision has not been established by a publicly available definitive contract document in the cited coverage. Future rights after the 2026–2028 term are likewise not settled by the announcements discussed here. Those uncertainties should not be converted into a claim that Apple has already departed.

Practical subscription choices
- Friday doubleheaders: Apple’s service is the direct destination.
- Sunday night or Wild Card games: Peacock and NBCUniversal outlets are the relevant options.
- Out-of-market viewing: MLB.TV may help, subject to blackout and national-exclusive rules.
- Selected live events: Netflix is relevant for events such as the Home Run Derby and MLB at Field of Dreams, not comprehensive weekly coverage.
- Broad national coverage: Expect to combine services or a live-TV bundle; no single service covers the entire 2026 rights map.
Official destinations include Apple TV, Peacock, ESPN, Netflix and MLB.TV. Availability and prices should be checked directly with each provider.
