If ER’s emergency-room ensemble and high-pressure shifts are what you miss, The Pitt is a natural series to try. It stars Noah Wyle, who also starred in ER, and follows doctors and nurses working in a modern Pittsburgh hospital. The connection is meaningful, but The Pitt is a new drama—not a continuation of ER.
What is The Pitt about?
Created by R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt centers on healthcare workers at a Pittsburgh hospital, telling its stories from the perspective of frontline staff. Its first season follows one hour of Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch’s 15-hour emergency-department shift in each episode. That real-time shift framework gives the series a clear point of overlap with ER: both put an ensemble of medical workers inside the pressures of an emergency department.
Why it may appeal to ER fans
Noah Wyle’s return to hospital drama
Wyle, who played Dr. John Carter on ER, stars in The Pitt as Dr. Robby and is also an executive producer. Viewers who remember Wyle’s earlier medical-drama role will find a familiar presence, but Robby is a different character in a different series.
Creative overlap behind the scenes
The official season-two announcement also credits ER veterans John Wells and Joe Sachs as executive producers. Wells’s credits include ER. That overlap, alongside the hospital setting and staff-centered storytelling, makes the comparison more than a surface resemblance.

A fresh series, not an ER sequel
The Pitt is set in a modern-day Pittsburgh hospital and is presented as a new drama. The available official information does not describe it as a continuation or shared-universe installment of ER. Think of it as another emergency-room ensemble, shaped by some of the people who helped make ER, rather than a return to the same characters.
Season two: episode count and release schedule
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that season two would have 15 episodes, released weekly on HBO Max. The announced run began January 8, 2026, and its scheduled finale was April 16, 2026. Those dates have passed; the announcement confirms the planned schedule, not present-day availability in every country or subscription tier.
Rank #2
The season-two cast named in the announcement includes Noah Wyle, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Sepideh Moafi. HBO Max was named as the service for the season-two debut. Check the service’s current local catalog for availability where you live.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Pitt medically accurate?
The show’s creators have described medical accuracy as an aim, but that stated intention is not independent evidence that every clinical detail is accurate. Sarah Aubrey, then Head of Max Original Programming, called the series “an update to procedural storytelling” and praised its cast for embodying the work of doctors and nurses in a 2025 emergency room. That is promotional commentary, not a medical-accuracy assessment.
