The People’s Elbow is a running elbow drop, but its defining feature is the theatrical pause before impact. The Rock removes his elbow pad, plays to the crowd, runs the ropes and drops an elbow onto a downed opponent’s sternum. WWE describes the routine as a performance built around showmanship and audience response—not a complicated technical maneuver.
What is The Rock’s People’s Elbow?
WWE labels it a “running elbow drop (with theatrics).” The Rock’s opponent is down on the mat when he performs the sequence, which ends with a straight elbow drop to the sternum. WWE lists the People’s Elbow among Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s signature moves on his official performer profile.
The move is part of scripted sports entertainment, not guidance for a real fight or a technique to try. The sources describing it explain the performance, not safe training steps or medical risks.
How does the People’s Elbow work as a performance?
The routine before impact
The familiar sequence is the point: The Rock removes and throws his elbow pad, plays to the audience, runs the ropes, then drops the elbow onto his prone opponent. WWE’s 2013 analysis of The Rock and John Cena’s signature maneuvers emphasizes the juke-jive routine, crowd reaction and the opponent’s humiliation as part of what makes the move memorable.

That same analysis estimated that an average People’s Elbow takes close to 10 seconds, including the run of the ropes. That is WWE’s editorial estimate in its 2013 article, not a universal measured duration.
Why the theatrics matter
The elbow drop itself is straightforward; the crowd-facing setup turns it into a shared moment between performer and audience. Removing the pad and playing to the crowd are staging choices, not technical necessities. In match terms, the extended setup can also be a weakness: WWE’s analysis notes that it gives an opponent time to recover or resist.

Where did the People’s Elbow come from?
Wrestling Inc. reported on May 17, 2025, that WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque recalled the move starting as a joke at non-televised live events. In his account, Johnson was trying to make The Undertaker laugh and break character; people backstage found the routine amusing, and Johnson was dared to try it on television. The audience reacted, and Johnson repeated it.
Levesque’s recollection, as quoted in Wrestling Inc.’s report on his High Performance podcast appearance, was: “It became a big thing, but it wasn’t designed to be that way. It was just [The Rock thinking], ‘Okay, I did this and they reacted, so I’m going to do that more. I’m going to explore that.’”
